Any visit to Southwest Virginia should start at the Smyth County Visitor Center! This officially designated Virginia Visitor Center is operated by the Chamber of Commerce of Smyth County, Inc. and houses Chamber offices. It's also Smyth County's official outlet for Virginia is for Lovers goodies!

The building's formal name is the H.L. Bonham Regional Development and Tourism Center, in honor of the building's original owner, Hezekiah Love Bonham, a regionally prominent farmer and businessman who pioneered innovations in the cultivation, processing, and sale of apples in southwest Virginia. 🍎🍎🍎

The Bonham House is a tourism attraction in its own right, in The Town of Chilhowie, Virginia. Designed in the Colonial Revival style by C. B. Kearfott, Jr., the Bonham House features classical detailing and retains all interior wood finishes and decorative mantels. Inside, visitors will find exhibits on the history of Smyth County, the Bonham Family, and Bonson Brand Apples, which once made Chilhowie the apple capital of SWVA.

We're thrilled to welcome the Marion Hungry Mothers a new collegiate wood bat team that will play in Marion, Va.'s Hurricane Stadium. Baseball is BACK in Marion!

Marion's new summer collegiate baseball team will play under a moniker that will be familiar to locals, albeit a bit unusual for a baseball team name. The Marion Hungry Mothers is preparing for their inaugural 2025 season to begin on Memorial Day, May 26. The team’s primary colors are red, black and white with the team mascot, an awakened and angry-looking mama bear, figuring prominently in the branding.
The Hungry Mothers, owned by Marion Baseball Club LLC, will compete against some of the best summer collegiate wood bat teams in the Southeast, with marquee matchups set with the Boone Bigfoots of the Coastal Plain League; new rival teams, the Carolina Disco Turkeys and Uwharrie Wampus Cats, established clubs out of North Carolina; and arguably the top two Southern Collegiate Baseball League programs, the Mooresville Spinners and Queen City Corndogs; along with several other teams. They''ll play close to 40 games overall this season, winding down in late July, and will be playing all 20 of their home games at Marion's Hurricane Stadium, a historic former minor league stadium that currently also sees high school baseball and football action during the school year. The team’s full schedule, along with the team’s new website and ticket platform will be unveiled in the coming weeks.
The Hungry Mothers bring back high-level baseball to a town and region that is a grizzled veteran with the sport. Affiliated baseball got its start at Hurricane Stadium in 1955 with the Welch/Marion A’s and the Marion Mets more famously played at the stadium from 1965-76 with a roster in 1965 that included future MLB Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan.

One of the most respected lutheries in the country is tucked away in the basement of an old school in Marion, Virginia. Students at the Wayne C Henderson School of Appalachian Arts learn the art and science of building beautiful stringed instruments, from the initial chunk of wood to the very first plucked note. Named after the famous Wayne Henderson, the school has been offering sold-out guitar builds inside its Gerald Anderson Lutherie since 2015. Now, students can also learn to build fiddles, dulcimers, and ukeleles, right in the heart of The Town of Marion, Virginia.

Ukelele workshops are the perfect introduction to the world of building instruments. The Henderson states, "Many people are a bit intimidated to begin their Lutherie experience with our immensely popular guitar building workshops. Because of this, we have decided to begin offering two Ukulele Builds per year, introducing the participant to the materials and techniques used in guitar building, only on a smaller scale. This weeklong workshop is modeled after our Guitar Building workshop and consists of one intensive week-long program, led by experienced Luthiers Lee Talbot, Howard Sathre, and Randal Eller.
