Whelks are out and about on Assateague!

They are one of the many animals we frequently encounter on our tours and get to see close up to learn so much about them!

Did you know?

The common whelk lives on sandy seabeds below the low tide mark. It is the most giant sea snail found in our seas and therefore the largest snail shell you are likely to find on our beaches. It lays its eggs in a spongy mass of up to 2000 egg capsules on the seabed. Once hatched, these balls of empty egg capsules often wash up on shore.
The common whelk is carnivorous and feeds on worms and other molluscs, often using the edge of its own shell to prize open other shells.

Here we have a real live dinosaur (actually he even predates the dinosaurs!) the “Horseshoe crab” is one of the first species to come out of the water in the Paleozoic era (over 500 million years ago)

Here are 5 cool facts about the Horseshoe crab!

1. Horseshoe crabs have a total of 10 eyes used for finding mates and sensing light.

2. A horseshoe crab's blood has a blue to blue-green color when exposed to the air. The blood is blue because it contains a copper-based
respiratory pigment called hemocyanin.

3. Horseshoe crabs have a total of six pairs of appendages. Females are larger than males and their first pair of appendages are pincers.

4. When it's time to lay her eggs, a female horseshoe crab will deposit somewhere around 4,000 eggs in clusters. She'll do this several times, laying up to around 20,000 eggs in one night and up to some 100,000 in each meeting season.

5. Horseshoe crabs are much more closely related to arachnids like spiders and ticks than true crabs.
