PRESS RELEASE: Spring is in Full Swing on Chincoteague Island
Chincoteague, VA—March 12, 2021: Who's ready for spring? After a long, cold winter with limited activities and events to enjoy, who isn't? Well, we have the remedy for your spring fever....a few days in beautiful Chincoteague Island where salt air and sunshine will awaken your senses and frogs will sing you to sleep. Enjoy miles of nature trails and pristine Atlantic Ocean beach in the beautiful Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge fws.gov/refuge/chincoteague/. Rent bicycles, relax on a boat cruise, or discover our marshes by kayak with opportunities to soak in the sights and sounds of spring. Guided or self-guided history tours are a great way to learn about the island's rich history and lore.
Historic Main Street Merchants officially usher in Spring with a two-day scavenger hunt to celebrate the "wearin' o' the green" on Chincoteague Island Friday, March 19, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday March 20, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visit chincoteaguemerchants.com/ to learn more about the Search for Shamrocks. Social distancing and masks will be required to ensure everyone's safety while visiting local businesses.
Easter weekend on Chincoteague Island has historically meant attending the Easter Decoy & Art Festival sponsored by the Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce. As an alternative this year, we invite you to participate in the inaugural virtual Decoy, Art, & Getaway Auction. This unique, online auction hosted by Zeb B. Barfield, Inc. www.zebsauctions.com/ runs April 4-17 with preview days on Friday, April 16, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday, April 17, 9 a.m. to Noon, at the Chincoteague Center located at 6155 Community Drive. We encourage you to help the chamber raise much needed operating funds as well as support the exhibitors who would normally be at our live show and our local merchants, restaurants, and lodging partners. Another first time event sponsored by the Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce is being planned for April 30-May2. "Around The Tump in 3 Days" will allow participants to eat, stay and play at local businesses while enjoying a long weekend of relaxation. Participants can hop on the Pony Express Trolley free of charge on Friday, April 30, 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday May 1, 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday May May 2, 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. for a fun-filled weekend exploring Chincoteague (the Tump). Participating businesses listed on the official playing card will offer specials or discounts. cards may be purchased at the chamber office located at 6733 Maddox Boulevard along with souvenir t-shirts, food trays, and Extravaganza Raffle tickets on event days or pre-orders will begin on April 5 by visiting the office or calling 757-336-6161. The Museum of Chincoteague Island's virtual ArtSea event facebook.com/events/427670168305169 can be enjoyed from 5:55 p.m. Friday, April 30 to 5:55 p.m. Saturday, May 1 while resting in your room between shopping, eating, and discovering. Preview days of the popular '5x5' art event will be Monday, April 26 to Friday, April 30 in the Museum Legacy Pavilion located at 7125 Maddox Boulevard.
Spring is foaling season on an island where wild ponies roam! Be sure to look for babies on wobbly legs with curly tails.....they will be close to mom!
