Did you know manatees control their buoyancy by farting?!

Manatees hold their mana-toots to float near the surface and release mana-toots to sink lower in the water.

Florida Manatees (Trichechus manatus latirostris) are herbivores, meaning they eat only vegetation. Their diet includes manatee grass, turtle grass, sea grass, and mangrove leaves. They eat 10-15% of their body weight daily, which equates to 150-300 pounds of food per day! When this plant matter is broken down in their digestive tract, methane is produced which they then use to control their buoyancy.

In winter, manatees can be seen in the preserve's estuaries.
