Good advice for my future guests!

Yellowstone is full of wonders, but many of them come with unexpected risks. Discover how to explore Yellowstone safely and enjoyably.

07/10/2024

(HEADS UP) The parkwide fire danger level for Yellowstone is now HIGH.
Currently, there are no active wildland fires in the park.
At this time, there are no fire restrictions in place or planned in the park.
Campfires are only permitted within established fire rings in campgrounds and some backcountry campsites.
Campfires must always be attended and cold to the touch before abandoning. Soak, stir, feel, repeat.
The Greater Yellowstone area is a fire-adapted ecosystem. Fire plays an important role in maintaining the health of this area’s wildlife habitat and vegetation.

Objects in mirror are closer than they appear.

This park has hazards on the road you aren’t used to at home (like 2,000-lb. bison). So, follow speed limits and stay with your car if you’re stuck in a wildlife jam. When taking a photo or looking around, use pullouts to avoid blocking traffic and damaging vegetation.

(Heads Up) A 47-year-old female from Phoenix, Arizona, was gored by a bison near the Lake Lodge Cabins on the north shore of Lake Yellowstone the morning of July 17.

▫ The female was walking with another individual in a field in front of the Lake Lodge when they saw two bison. Upon seeing them, the visitors turned to walk away from the bison. One of the bison charged and gored the woman.

▫ The woman sustained significant injuries to her chest and abdomen and was transported by helicopter to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.

▫ It is unknown how close the individuals were to the bison when it charged.

▫ This incident remains under investigation, and there is no additional information to share, including the woman’s condition.

▫ Wildlife in Yellowstone National Park are wild and can be dangerous when approached. When an animal is near a campsite, trail, boardwalk, parking lot, or in a developed area, give it space. Stay more than 25 yards (23 m) away from all large animals - bison, elk, bighorn sheep, deer, moose, and coyotes - and at least 100 yards (91 m) away from bears and wolves. If need be, turn around and go the other way to avoid interacting with a wild animal in proximity.

▫ During mating season (rut) from mid-July through mid-August, bison can become agitated more quickly. Use extra caution and give them additional space during this time.

▫ Bison are unpredictable and can run three times faster than humans.

▫ This is the first reported incident in 2023. The last reported incident occurred on June 28, 2022.

FYI IMPORTANT INFORMATION

FYI IMPORTANT INFORMATION

(Update!) Portions of Yellowstone’s Northeast Entrance Road in Lamar Canyon (between Tower Junction and Lamar Valley) were successfully blasted on June 5, 7 and 8. Due to the large clean up and removal of materials associated with the blasting, closures originally planned for today (Monday), June 12, and June 15 are cancelled. Additional blasting is needed to complete the job.

Additional blasting / road closure windows will now occur on June 14, from 7-9 p.m., and June 21 and June 22 from 7-9 p.m. There is a likelihood the contractor will not need the entire 2-hour closure window and may open it sooner depending on clean up.

We appreciate the public’s understanding as we continue to finish work on this critical section of road.
