~ Local Theaters ~
In the early 1900s, Downtown Clarksville was home to many different theaters that provided new and exciting entertainment to its customers.
The most recognizable theater to us today is the Lillian Theater (pictured below). The Lillian Theater was originally constructed in 1912 and received its name from the daughter of Josep Goldberg, the theaterโ€™s builder. The Lillian theater opened at a crucial time for downtown entertainment, as the Elite Theater and the Star Theater had both closed in 1911.
Tragedy eventually struck the Lillian Theater as it burned down on December 29, 1914. However, it was quickly rebuilt and reopened in 1915. The theater could hold an audience of around 500 people and was a beloved attraction downtown. The success of the Lillian inspired the company to open the Capitol Theater in 1928. This theater also burnt down in 1935 and was rebuilt across the street, becoming the first theater with air conditioning.
The Lillian struggled during the Great Depression and eventually closed its doors for the last time in 1932. The Capitol Theater remained open, and the Lillian was eventually remodeled and reopened as the Roxy Theater in March of 1947.

~ Emerald Hill ~
Beginning as a simple farmhouse in the 1820โ€™s, Emerald Hill quickly grew and is now one of the oldest buildings within Clarksville city limits. The mansion, located on North Second Street, was home to Gustavus Adolphus Henry and his family. Henry is best known as the โ€œEagle Orator of Tennesseeโ€ who embarked on an illustrious career as an attorney, planter, and Confederacy Senator. He was involved in the building of his familyโ€™s mansion and encouraged an addition in the Gothic style in the late 1800โ€™s. Emerald Hill stayed in the Henry family until Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Henry Cross gifted the mansion to Austin Peay State University in 1966.
Austin Peay State University allowed the mansion to be occupied by a faculty member until 1974 when they decided to move their alumni office from Browning Hall into Emerald Hill. It soon became clear that the historic mansion needed considerable renovations and the university began a campaign to raise renovation funds.
In 1996, the Trane Co. Alumni Support Group donated $50,000 to Austin Peay State University to begin the renovation fundraiser. In 1998, Wayne and Bobbie Pace, Austin Peay State University alumni, donated $650,000. This generous donation made the total fundraised amount $1 million and renovations began. The building was renamed the Pace Alumni Center at Emerald Hill and still stand on the Austin Peay State University campus today.
