~ Emerald Hill ~
Beginning as a simple farmhouse in the 1820โs, Emerald Hill quickly grew and is now one of the oldest buildings within Clarksville city limits. The mansion, located on North Second Street, was home to Gustavus Adolphus Henry and his family. Henry is best known as the โEagle Orator of Tennesseeโ who embarked on an illustrious career as an attorney, planter, and Confederacy Senator. He was involved in the building of his familyโs mansion and encouraged an addition in the Gothic style in the late 1800โs. Emerald Hill stayed in the Henry family until Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Henry Cross gifted the mansion to Austin Peay State University in 1966.
Austin Peay State University allowed the mansion to be occupied by a faculty member until 1974 when they decided to move their alumni office from Browning Hall into Emerald Hill. It soon became clear that the historic mansion needed considerable renovations and the university began a campaign to raise renovation funds.
In 1996, the Trane Co. Alumni Support Group donated $50,000 to Austin Peay State University to begin the renovation fundraiser. In 1998, Wayne and Bobbie Pace, Austin Peay State University alumni, donated $650,000. This generous donation made the total fundraised amount $1 million and renovations began. The building was renamed the Pace Alumni Center at Emerald Hill and still stand on the Austin Peay State University campus today.
