Did you know that after the US Army captured Clarksville in 1862, the area near Dunbar Cave became a sanctuary for self-liberated enslaved African Americans? By the end of 1864, the refugee camp, known as Affricanna Town, had grown to over 4,000 people and remained active until at least 1867. This settlement provided crucial safety and security for those taking their first steps toward freedom. 🕊️✨
In 2021, a Civil War Trails marker was installed in Dunbar Cave State Park to honor this historic site. 🏞️
📍 Visit Dunbar Cave State Park and step back in time to explore this incredible piece of history. Let’s celebrate and remember the resilience and courage of those who sought freedom.
