Port Royal holds a significant place in Montgomery County’s history as one of the oldest meeting places for African-Americans, Benevolent Society Lodge #210. Established in 1872, the community thrived post-emancipation, creating a vibrant and resilient society.

Despite economic struggles and challenges, including the 1994 arson attack by white supremacists, the Benevolent Lodge Order #210 has remained a cornerstone since its charter in 1884. Today, the lodge continues its mission to support the community, alongside the historic Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

Did you know that after the US Army captured Clarksville in 1862, the area near Dunbar Cave became a sanctuary for self-liberated enslaved African Americans? By the end of 1864, the refugee camp, known as Affricanna Town, had grown to over 4,000 people and remained active until at least 1867. This settlement provided crucial safety and security for those taking their first steps toward freedom. 🕊️✨

In 2021, a Civil War Trails marker was installed in Dunbar Cave State Park to honor this historic site. 🏞️

📍 Visit Dunbar Cave State Park and step back in time to explore this incredible piece of history. Let’s celebrate and remember the resilience and courage of those who sought freedom.

Kicking off Black History Month in Clarksville with National Women in Sports Day! 🌟

Today, we celebrate the incredible achievements of Clarksville's own African American trailblazer: Wilma Rudolph.

Born in Clarksville, TN, Wilma overcame polio to become the first American woman to win three gold medals in a single Olympic Games. Her track and field victories in the 100m, 200m, and 4x100m relay at the 1960 Rome Olympics broke barriers for African American women in sports.
