360° views from Sassafras Mountain 🏔
The highest point in South Carolina is right here in Pickens County! With an elevation of 3,563 feet you'll see some of the most breathtaking views in the state form Sassafras Mountain. On a clear day you can even see the mountains of North Carolina and Georgia!
The new viewing platform was built in 2019 and is just a short walk uphill from the gravel parking lot. The platform sits right on the border of the Carolinas and gives viewers the chance to see 50 miles in virtually every direction. In the parking lot there is also a trailhead for the famous Foothills trail, which stretches 77 miles, connecting Oconee and Table Rock State Parks. The trail boasts beautiful flowers and wildlife like you've never seen before. For a real treat go at sunset and see the sun go down in three states at once!

Hello beautiful! 🦋
This guy is a Red-Spotted Purple butterfly. At first glance he appears to be a swallow tail, but alas, he has no tail. These butterflies look so much like swallowtails as to mimic their poisonous friends for protection against predators.
These guys are native to the Eastern US from the Gulf to Southern Canada and you’ll often find them hanging out near a stream or in a wooded area. Their favorite foods are rotting fruit, yum, and dung, super yum.
