view. Dickenson County, located in Southwest Virginia, is known for its beautiful scenic mountains, valleys, rivers, streams and abundance of wild life. The Breaks Interstate Park, one of two interstate parks in the United States is one of our top tourism attractions. Dr. Ralph Stanley's museum is located in the Town of Clintwood and is a main venue on The Crooked Road, Virginia's Heritage Music Trail. For a healthy vacation, there are lots of hiking trails, with one just opening recently called The Cranesnest Trail, located near the Cranesnest River for hiking, biking and horseback riding. Kayaking is a favorite during the first four weekends in October when white water releases from the John Flannagan Dam are done. Birch K**b Tower with a view of 5 states shows the breathtaking beauty of our mountains. The Cumberland Mountain Drive across Virginia Scenic Rt. 611 takes you back in time. Beautiful mountain views, wildlife, springs coming out of the mountain with sparkling water, and many different species of birds along the way. Stop by the Visitor's Center in Clintwood to pick up maps and brochures of many places to visit in Dickenson County. contact Rita Surratt, Tourism Director for more information at 276-926-6074.

Thanks so much Cassie McAmis for doing this sign for us to put back up at the turnoff on Rt. 611 to Birch K**b Tower. It has directions (arrows) on both sides so hopefully, no one else will get lost trying to find the tower.

Unfortunately, the previous sign was destroyed when hit by a vehicle, so we will be happy to get this one installed. Larry Barton and I had this at the top of our tourism list to get done as soon as possible.

As the Tourism Director for Dickenson County, I want to report that the Tourism Department in Dickenson County has been working hard in promoting the county. Larry Barton and I just closed out our VTC Grant funding from "Thrills from the Hollers to the Hills" and with that you will be seeing 5 new billboards going up in promoting some of our great events in the county. We have a 1/4 page ad that just came out in this issue of Virginia Blue Ridge Outdoors magazine, 1/2 page ad coming out in Virginia Living, Guest Quest Ads ( where we sent out around 1,000 brochures last year from requests). We are doing ads in NC, VA and TN/KY so reaching out to a lot of folks who want to visit here. We have a new video featuring "Hiking in the Breaks Park", and out of this grant funding, thanks to Virginia Tourism Corporation for always being there for us, we did new Dickenson County Tourism Brochures, we are doing digital ads with Leisure Media, placing our new brochure in several Virginia Welcome Centers. From Austin Bradley's report for our closing grant showing a 19.5% increase in overnight lodging revenue at the Breaks Park during the period of this grant, he says, “I believe that the extra marketing done on the park’s behalf by Dickenson County Tourism contributed to this increase”. This is the thing we love to hear and for everyone to know we work hard for our county. We also did a lot of marketing for Spearhead Trails and Steve Pike remarked that they saw an increase of 13% increase from permit sales during the grant period.

By the way, when you come down Indian Creek Mountain, check out our 1st Billboard featuring "John Berry" who will be performing at the Jettie Baker Center on Sunday, July 28th. We were happy to promote the Jettie Baker Center and Town of Clintwood.

If you have any questions please call me at 276-926-6074 or email [email protected]. We would love to hear from you!!
