The 4th and last of our FWC EFP Red Snapper Project Trips for this quarter in the books. Bill and Sabrina crushed it. Some of there anglers couldn’t make it so they came to work.

A lot of people praise this project and a whole lot of people want to hate. I’m not sure if the haters just don’t understand or they are just angry because they are jealous or maybe just angry because they know the red snapper fishery should be opened back up.

There is way to much to type to give everyone the full scope of what is happening. This project is good for the fishery. Hopefully the data collected will be a step forward in getting red snapper opened back up.

Any charters that get selected for the future I highly recommend you read the modules and do everything exactly how it’s laid out in the project guidelines. Measure each fish with the kept or release card on the provided measuring tool in front of the camera. Use a single circle hook. Keep the first 36, don’t shake off short fish. Vent fish and use the descending device. Fill out the angler info, catch and release info accurately. This is how the project was pitched and set up so do it exactly by the books.

Fresh red snapper carcasses if anyone wants to come get them. We have 36 that were caught a couple hours ago. Sunrise Marina Port Canaveral. Prob be here at least another hour cleaning fish. We have only filleted 10 so far. 5pm now.

Another big sand tiger brought boat side of the Sea Sharker on one of our 4 hours shark trips. This is probably number 10 for the week. We have been catching 1 or 2 about every trip.

3rd EFP FWC red snapper trip study in the books. This was a cool trip. We had some nice size red snapper with the largest just shy of 22lbs.

Jake the FWC biologist that was with us found the largest red snapper otolith he has seen yet and it did not come from our largest red snapper.

We also had more releases than ever with a total of 5 amberjack released (they almost always release well) 4 gag grouper and 1 red grouper released (all swam down strong with no signs of barotrauma and no use of descending device or venting tool)
Last drop of the day when we needed 1 more red snapper to complete our 36 fish limit we had 4 red snapper and 1 gag grouper come up at the same time. This meant we had 3 red snapper and a gag to measure and release. Out of those we had 1 red snapper that didn’t make it. I was using my slam method the whole day and it worked once again. The 1 red snapper that didn’t go we might have been able to vent him but at that point it was getting pretty rough and hard to get back to the fish so we left him.

We did also finally get our first recorded depredation from a shark bite. Big sandbar shark swam up and grabbed half of a 12lb red snapper.

This study is going great. I agree with everything I think the data will show coming from our trips with the exception of depredation. Overall it is way higher than what our results are coming up with.
