We were going to post about when you think we'd all start hearing fireworks as people get ready for their big 4th of July celebrations annnnnnd then it actually started a little bit last night.

You can most likely count on the amount of fireworks going off each night increasing every night until the 4th and possibly a night or two after.

What a great nesting season we are having this year!

On June 23, 2022 we had 8,586 loggerhead nests and 1,065 green nests in the refuge so our nesting numbers this year are significantly higher at this point in the season.

🚨BIG NEWS!!🚨 We are thrilled to announce that Florida House Bill 1489, a bill designating the southern area of Brevard County as an Area of Critical State Concern, was SIGNED INTO LAW by the Governor yesterday! ✍️The law requires state, regional, and local government agencies to prevent the adverse impacts of development on resources critical to sea turtle habitat.

This new protection area contains the entirety of the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge, a 20.5-mile section of shoreline and the most important sea turtle nesting beach in the United States. It also contains the Indian River Lagoon, an important estuary, recreational fishery, and developmental habitat for sea turtles.

We are so grateful to our conservation partners, especially the Barrier Island Protection and Preservation Association (BIPPA), legislators, local community members, and our dedicated supporters who helped contribute to this victory for sea turtles!
