For the past 2 years, Brevard Discovery Garden has been making signs to identify the plants in our demonstration gardens. To date, our volunteers have made over 200 plant signs which include information on the plant name and type and a QR code that you can scan to get more detailed plant information. Here's a photo of the most recent batch of signs ready to be installed in the garden.

Our plant sign team uses a laser cutter/engraver in the Melbourne Makerspace workshops to make the signs. Melbourne Makerspace is an all-volunteer community of people who learn from, and teach each other Electronics, Woodworking, Metalworking, 3D Printing, Sewing, Pottery, Laser Cutting and Engraving and more. If you have a hobby, chances are they have the tools to do it and people willing to help you learn about it. Here's a link to the Melbourne Makerspace website if you'd like to learn more about what they have to offer.

Our Master Gardeners have been BUSY BEES in the BDG Nursery this summer. Two new MGs have been working on the Louisiana Iris swale next to the nursery - dirty work but the payoff will be gorgeous blooming irises! Also, MGs Margaret and Naomi participated in the first MG Propagation Class held in the Nursery. Pollinator plants grown by the class are pictured below and were donated to the recent Honey Bee Festival and the Brevard Zoo Bonsai and Botanicals Weekend.

FREE POLLINATOR CENSUS TRAINING!
Join us for a free pollinator census training class on Friday, Aug. 23rd, beginning at 9 am. After the training we will go to the Brevard Discovery Garden and do a pollinator count for 15 minutes. This training is open to Master Gardeners and the public. Share this information with your family and friends! Use the Eventbrite link below to save your seat for the training:
https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-great-southeast-pollinator-census-in-brevard-tickets-995383257117?aff=oddtdtcreator

The pollinator census training will take place at the Brevard Extension office at 3695 Lake Dr, Cocoa Florida. The pollinator counting for the census will continue on Saturday, August 24th, at any location you choose!

During the training you will learn how to identify the pollinator groups of Carpenter bees, Bumble bees, Honeybees, Wasps, Flies, Butterflies/Moths, and other insects. If you want to conduct your first count in the Discovery Garden after the training, bring a chair, hat, beverage, clipboard, pencil/pen, hat, and a timer (like the one on a cell phone). Copies of the Great Southeast Pollinator Census Observation Sheet will be provided. To participate in the Census, you must fill out that sheet and upload your data to the GSEPC website.

The Great Southeast Pollinator Census was created by the University of Georgia Extension Services in 2019, and three major goals were identified for this citizen science project. The goals include creating sustainable pollinator habitats, increasing the entomological literacy of the citizens, and generating useful data about our pollinator populations.

Even in the peak of summer, hot peppers are an edible that will thrive. If you don’t like spicy peppers, we suggest growing them as an ornamental in your landscape (this is called companion planting). A few favorite varieties are ‘Cherry Bomb’, Hungarian Hot Wax’, ‘Big Chile II’, and ‘Numex’.

It’s Pollinator Week and we’re celebrating! Roughly 35 percent of the world’s food crops depend on animal pollinators. We can help by choosing landscape plants that provide essential habitat for bees, butterflies, moths, beetles, hummingbirds, and other pollinators.
