Conserving the Collections
It's not very often you visit a museum and the staff actually want you to break something!
Participants at our "Tours & Toddies: Conserving the Collection" on March 15th had the opportunity to learn how to put ceramics back together again. But to put them back together, they had to break the things first!
By the smiles on their faces, they enjoyed breaking the vases much more than putting them back together 😂

Arta Cody
Don't miss out on registering for tomorrow's Western Winter Traditions event! We're diving into the winter traditions across the American West, including the winter traditions of the Cody family.
Arta Cody was a child on the frontier, a socialite in Europe, and a celebrity's daughter, and tomorrow, we're getting up close to some of her artifacts that help illustrate winter traditions!
Two hundred sixty one years ago today, July 9, 1762, the wife of Russia's Emperor Peter III, rallies the army of St. Petersburg against her husband and is soon proclaimed Empress Catherine II, the sole ruler of Russia.
Known as Catherine the Great, she ruled for the next 34 years, longer that any other female ruler in Russian history.
Catherine the Great originally presented a very beautiful blunderbuss to Louis XV of France and this firearm can be found in the Cody Firearms Museum here at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West! The gun's stock is inlaid with silver wire scrolls after the patterns of Guerard, and the mounts are all of chiseled steel damascened with a gold fish roe background. The rear section of the barrel is inlaid with a silver portrait bust of Louis XV forward of the breech. The muzzle section of the barrel is further ornamented with the French Royal Arms and other symbols of France in red gold.
To find more behind the scenes stories and other interesting artifacts at the museum, book with Exclusive Tours at Buffalo Bill Center of the West and let us help discover YOUR West!

Every year the local Cody FFA chapter hosts a wreath laying ceremony at the base of The Scout in honor and memory of William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody's life. Normally, it takes place on Cody's birthday, February 26th, but the event got bumped to the next day because the 26th was a Sunday this year.
It's a short ceremony that includes a reenactment of a Pony Express mail hand-off as well as Annie's Oakley's famous trick shooting. The final event for today's event was a six-gun salute, shown here.
During this ceremony, the students discuss many of Cody's accomplishments, including his Wild West and the town he built in the Bighorn Basin. Whether you love him or dislike him, Cody's actions permanently altered the landscapes of the American West and how people think about them.

Bison (colloquially known as Buffalo) are some of the most iconic and recognizable animals in the American West. It's been Wyoming's state mammal since 1985 and they are the largest land mammal in North America, weighing up to 2400 lbs.)
To liven up everyone's Tuesday afternoon, here are some silly buffalo jokes from around the Center of the West:
What do you call a buffalo at the North Pole?
.
Lost!
What is a buffalo's favorite sandwich topping?
.
Bison Jam!
What did the buffalo say when he dropped his son off at school?
.
Bison!
And, finally, why did the Buffalo cross the road?
.
To get to the Super Bowl! (Too soon?)
If you want to hear more puns and wisecracks about the flora and fauna that call the Yellowstone region home, make sure to stop by the Exclusive Tours Depot. We got jokes!🤣🦬
1883 Colt Gatling Gun, Cody Firearms Museum 2022
It's not every day that you get to see the curator of the Cody Firearms Museum crank the lever on an 1883 Colt Gatling gun....
Day 30 of #Museum30 - Why Museum 30?
Well, why not? What better way to bring more history of the American West to the world than to participate in an international social media project and share 30 (ish, we missed a few) days of our Museum life?!
#museum30 offers us the opportunity to think about our collections and our profession in new and fun ways. It's also an awesome example of a grassroots movement because this project started with @magnifyzoology and her love of museums and heritage.
The challenge is always to share one photo a day inspired by the prompt. This video of snow falling on our Buffalo Bill statue, which stands to greet every visitor rain or shine, snow or wind, seemed appropriate as it signals the end of the trail for #museum30 2022. At the same time, it also signals the start of our wintery wild west world and holiday season. So stay tuned for announcements about upcoming events, future programs, and opportunities to support your Exclusive Tours team!
