Vancouver - Gastown’s most famous landmark is its steam-powered clock, located on the corner of Cambie and Water Street. The clock was built to cover a steam grate that was part of Vancouver’s distributed steam-heating system. The clock was built as a way to harness the steam and to prevent street people from sleeping on the spot in cold weather. The day has finally arrived! THIS is what we came for, to experience first hand Rocky Mountaineer !
First let me say, for those who haven’t been following along, the staff at RM has been amazing at rearranging things to accommodate our learning group. They literally flew in new staff and added an additional Gold Leaf car to an existing train JUST so we could have one day (instead of the planned 3) aboard their amazing trains.
These are not rushed days aboard the Rocky Mountaineer, the trains travel across their routes slowly allowing guests to relax and absorb the amazing scenery passing by.
Enjoy the views, we certainly did!

Change in plans! Thanks to the hard work of our hosts at Rocky Mountaineer we are headed to Kamloops (meeting of the waters), the area is a semi arid forest, despite 2 rivers and a lake.
This small city is very spread out and has the feel of a small town.
We will spend 2 nights here, changing hotels but we ARE travel pros after all, so no problem!
Opting to spend our free day in Kamloops on a Wildlife and Wine tour, first stop BC Wildlife Park.
We joke this is our first “Rocky Mountaineer” train experience….have to have a sense of humor.
This is home to the rare Kermode “spirit” bear, a subspecies of black bear where both parents must carry the “spirit” gene. Clover, age 1 at the time, was found orphaned and brought to the center. It may seem sad, to cage a bear….but if it were not for the center, she would certainly have perished as bears learn their life and hunting skills from their mothers from ages 1-2. The center cares for 2 black bears and 2 grizzlies. The food bill is $10,000 per month….per bear! There is also a raptor refuge, buffalo, fox, raccoons and a great play center for kids.
