"This is the best ride you have never heard of!" says the author of the 140+ mile route called the - Toxaway Cherokee Parkway Highlands Loop. The author says ""Mountain tops, water falls, twisty turns and a little bit of mountain highway too.
From Lake Toxaway - travel the lesser traveled 281 - decent road with no car traffic to 215 north. You will only see cyclist on this gorgeous tree canopy twisty turny.
Then jump on the Blue Ridge Parkway for the mountain top cooler weather 6,000+ elevation takes the heat out.
Start to warm back up as you head on 19 through Cherokee.
Now you can pick up some speed 0n 74 which is a 4 lane divided highway for about 11 miles to grab 28 and 64 into Highlands. Some of the most spectacular riding you have never heard about. About 2 hours east of Portland, in WA state, is a route called Bluebird Highway. The author says "pretty straight road east out of Glendalewith with views of the grasslands and wind turbines to the south and forest to the north for at least 12 miles before you get to Rock Creek. Nice views of the scenic canyon at Rock Creek which is a good place for the adventure riders to head south towards the Columbia River. Road twists a bit in and out of forest and prairie .. After Bickelton the road winds merrily through the dryland wheat and the pavement improves the further east you go. If you are near Philadelphia, check out this escape from Philly called - "Northwest Escape from Philadelphia on PA-23". The author says - Starting near Merion Memorial Park, ride west on PA-23. It will start rolling thru some suburbs and you will hit scenes of industrial decline, passing a very large cargo rail station, thru some beautiful rolling hills and turns with lots of foliage. Eventually you will hit Valley Forge Park, and I recommend exploring throughout. Movie studios in Union city Plenty of gas stops and restaurants ... The southern section has sweeping curves and some smaller hills. This is very enjoyable. About halfway between Pittsburgh and Philly, in the middle of PA is a great newly added route called - The Boalsburg to Belleville Loop. The submitter says of this 54-mile route - "This is such a fun loop, only taking about an hour and 15 min. Going over two mountains with great scenery and lots of looping curves, the roads are all in good condition, with 305 being in especially nice condition considering it's in the middle of nowhere. The only issue might be if you get caught behind a slow moving vehicle since a majority of the ride is on two-lane roads but there are chances to pass if that does happen. Nice new loop northwest of Dallas Ft Worth area just posted called - Decatur-Forestburg Loop. The rider who submitted says - "Mostly farm and cattle grazing land. For being less than an hour away from the DFW metroplex--it's a great little escape. On clear days, when you're headed north on 730 or west on 455, you can see the wind farms up near Muenster. This route is primarily sweeping curves with some coming close to being twisties--especially toward the end on Old Decatur Road. For North Texas, it has decent elevation changes along the way. On FM 455, you can open things up a bit but be careful--TX Highway Patrol knows how much fun this road is for us. On the southbound FM 1655 section, just north of Alvord there are 2 nice sweepers that can be peg-scrapers depending on your bike and mood. You'll know you're there when you see the big flashing arrow signs pointing the way. Old Decatur Road is the tightest, curviest of the loop--but also has the slowest speeds. Southeast of Lexington, KY is a great new route submitted by a rider calling it the "The Stanton Ball Buster." The submitter says of it that "I had a great time on this ride. There are a bunch of blind hairpin turns, twisties, grade changes, you name it. Road Quality? Let's face it that's the reason for the name. The road quality is an obstacle to overcome. There are potholes, landslides with failing roads, gravel on the road, leaves, su***de squirrels, deer that want to ride with you, turkey vultures that Will Not Move, and part of the road becomes gravel for a mile or two. So there is plenty of things to keep you busy and occupied while you are carving the nasty curves. This route takes you past 2 different gateways into the Red River Gorge itself - Nada Tunnel being the most accessible. You also go past natural bridge state park which has a simply stunning view. This route bypasses most of the tourism (precisely what I like about it), but there is a lot nearby in any of the coastal towns. The stretch of Highway 101 that this bypasses is loaded with little tourist towns. Its called Palo Duro Canyon Short Loop and the submitter says - "The rest stop on TX-207 features a stunning panoramic view of the canyon. FM 1258 features views of the Great Southern Plains. Palo Duro Canyon is only 16 miles, but drops 800 feet to the canyon floor. Watch out for wildlife including deer, coyotes, and feral hogs. The Lighthouse formation is well worth the 6 mile round trip hike on the well maintained trail.
