Days 10, 11, 12- Amsterdam

We arrived in Amsterdam just in time for our tour- we cruised around the canals while learning about Amsterdam’s history. Such a beautiful city. We ended our tour in the Museum District where we had a guided tour of the vanGogh museum. I am so glad we were able to see this.

We headed back to the boat for lunch. In the afternoon, we had an excursion to Zaanse Schans to see this heritage site and windmills. We ate ice cream from local cows, walked up a windmill, and sampled and bought way too much cheese!

We are headed back to the ship for our last evening. They gave us very clear instructions about disembarking the next morning. This is such a fabulous experience compared to disembarking from an ocean cruise, just less people and less stress.

We stayed one additional night in Amsterdam. We did a food tour through their market place and did a lot of walking through the city. We went to a local seafood restaurant in the evening, which was delicious. We were exhausted and so got to bed the earliest we had the whole trip for our early morning flight the next day.

This was the trip of a lifetime and I am so thankful for the Adventure!

Day 9- Cologne, Germany
We actually entered Cologne around midnight so was able to watch our ship dock. Also, we were in the city during the Europe World Cup, and there were some fun, excited revelers, leaving the city when we pulled up, singing the whole way home. we saw some excited soccer fans in the city the next day as well and the energy was palatable- so fun!

This morning started with another delicious breakfast, then we left the ship and started a walking tour with an destination expert. The walking tour ended at the beautiful Cologne Cathedral- the largest and most beautiful church we saw the entire trip. And the inside it was even more beautiful than the outside.

After this we walked through the historical downtown area and shopping district. We had tickets to the Cologne Chocolate Museum. As part of the Adventures By Disney excursion, we were able to place an order for a custom chocolate bar that we delivered to the ship that evening.

We walked around some more, stopped and got Curryworst and a pretzel and then walked back to the ship. We had to be back early today because we had longer distance to get to Amsterdam.

Once we were all aboard, the there was a lunch with worst and pretzels and local beer. We decided to skip the afternoon activities for a needed rest (one of a very few the whole trip!). Another wonderful dinner- this night we signed up to eat with an Adventure Guide and this was so much fun. There were about 12 of us total and it was a great way to get to know our Guide and meet to others on the boat.

Day 8- PM Castle Cruiser

We set off from Rudesheim and entered the UNESCO Upper Middle Rhine Valley. In 2 hours we saw 25+ castles and the Lorelei Rock. I have definitely never seen so many castles in such short time. And the weather could not have been better.

Afterwards we had our nightly cocktail hour briefing and this night the recognized all of the HS graduates. There were quite a few of them!

For dinner, this was out night to do the Chefs Table- a gourmet 7-course meal overlooking the aft of the ship. We could not have picked a better night because of the amazing scenery. Afterwards, we sat on the top deck and watched the sunset. One our best days for sure.

Day 8- Rudesheim morning

This was a jam packed day! This morning we arrived to Rudesheim and had just a quick walk to the town. In the morning, we visited Siegfried’s Mechanical Music Cabinet Museum. This was an amazing display of self-playing insurgents- some of which could mimic and entire orchestra. It was very impressive.

After this we met our Adventures Guide at a cafe and tried the famous Rudesheim coffee, which was strong coffee with brandy and whipped cream. Potent stuff! Our guides also gave us tickets to ride the gondola to the top of the hillside. There was a moment at the top and lots of walking trails.

We came back down and ate lunch at an Italian restaurant that also served snitzle- a little something for everyone. Then it was time to board the ship for the day.

Day 7- Heidelberg, Germany

Breakfast and a ride through the countryside to Heidelberg. First stop, we toured the castle and the ruins. Amazing history and views looking over the town.

We took the funicular down to the town. We ate at a German brewery and this food was so good! Snitzel, spaetzel, and leibercasen. After a heavy meal, we walked around the town- the old bridge, the oldest university in Germany, and we shopped and somehow made room for spaghetti ice (gelato pressed through a sieve to resemble spaghetti).

We headed back to the ship for a brief rest, then has a wonderful nights dinner, a one-man band, and then dancing. A late night!

Day 6- Strasbourg, France
After a nice breakfast with new friends, we headed out for Strasbourg. First this morning we had a canal boat tour of the city. Learned some history and the town is beautiful.

Unfortunately towards the end of the boat ride, it started raining- well pouring. We were still determined to tour the town. They have this gorgeous Notre Dame Church. We were able to purchase tickets for the astronomical clock processional. Apparently this is one of the clocks where Walt got the idea for it’s a small world.

After this the rain has strolled down to a drizzle so we strolled around the river and town, did a little shopping, ate lunch and then Dylan when back to the ship.

I stayed out for a wine tasting in a historic hospital. Some of these wine barrels are from the 1800s. The hospital is still operating today and the wine is kept in the cellars. It was fascinating.

Then everyone returned for our evening meeting, another amazing dinner. This evening we had an accordion and French singer perform. Lovely. We hit the hay for another fun day tomorrow.

Day 5- Europa Park, Rust Germany
Started the meal with a nice breakfast- I am getting really used to eating a good breakfast in the mornings! And then we headed to Europa Park for the day.

It is a large theme park- like an Epcot on steroids. They have 16 countries each with rides and food- and their mascot is a mouse! The similarities to Disney don’t stop there- they have an Epcot ball, a soaring ride, pirates at the Caribbean, the original princesses from the Grimm

We had so much fun here- it was not very crowded and Dylan was able to do single rider line for the big rides. It is a beautiful park and some great food!

We got back to the ship at 5- just in time to get ready for another fabulous dinner. After dinner ,there was the “sip and sail”- a happy hour where a speciality cocktail is offered. And then there was trivia. It was so fun- and always brings the competitive side out! We ended up staying too late up talking with some other passengers and then hit the hay. It was another amazing day!

Day 4- Travels and boarding time!

Said good bye to our beautiful Swiss mountain town and boarded the Grindelwald train headed to Basel. It was time to board the AmaLucia.

We boarded, had lunch and then walked around Basel. We headed back to get in our rooms at 3 and settled in for the next 8 days.

At 6 there was the Captains welcome and we met the Adventure guides and the crew. It looks like we are in for a lot of fun and activities over the next week! We then all went to dinner for a 6 course meal- it was some of the best food I have ever had and I was really impressed with their ability to keep everyone happy and fed! After dinner we were headed into another loch so some of us went up top to watch this really cool experience(basically an elevator for a ship).

There were people having a dance party in the lounge but Dylan and I headed for bed. Cabins were so comfortable with lots of storage and a large bathroom. Plenty of space for 2.

Day 3- Grindelwald

We had a good night sleep and headed down to the breakfast buffet. The coffee, the croissants- love a European breakfast!

We headed to Jungfraujoch my walking through a little neighborhood- beautiful. First we boarded a gondola 🚠- the biggest I have seen and went straight up the Eiger Mountain. Then we boarded the historic train strait to the Top of Europe.

This is an amazing excursion, and I highly recommend it. My favorite part was the ice cave and of course the views. It might be my highest at 13,600 feet!

After a quick rest, I ventured out to Grindelwald First. This is a much smaller gondola ride straight up another mountain. The scenery on the way up was amazing – saw Swiss cows with their bells ringing, waterfalls. Just breathtaking.

This mountain has many activities available, such as mountain biking, paragliding, Zip lining. Since it was getting late, I did the first cliff walk, which is definitely not for the faint of heart. But I highly recommend.

We did a little shopping after this. And then headed to dinner for fondue. It was amazing day and I can’t believe how beautiful this region is!

Days 1 & 2-Travels
Columbia to Philadelphia to Zurich. Train to Interlaken and train to Grindelwald. We arrived at 2pm Tuesday and were able to check in to our hotel. We spent the day nursing our jet lag, walking and shopping. We had a really nice dinner at the hotel next door. It is daylight here until almost 10pm so I was able to make it to 10:30 before calling it a night. I’m hoping for a good nights sleep!

Have you ever thought a European River Cruise sounded great?

Me too- the idea of seeing so much of Europe while only unpacking once was really appealing. But I was concerned that we might feel out of place.

The perfect solution for us was Adventures by Disney river cruises. They rent out one of the AmaWaterways boats and offer Disney guides and daily excursions. They have adults only and family cruises and offer still have the amazing food and service that Ama is known for!

So join my son and I as we set sail on the AmaLucia from Basel to Amsterdam on the Rhine with Adventures by Disney! We are on the family cruise even though my son is 18 because I have heard it is a little laid back, which is more our speed.

Sometimes a trip to the beach is all you need!

My favorite part of Sandals Emerald Bay was the beach. The water, most times, was calm and so clear it could’ve been a swimming pool. And no matter where you stayed on the property, there was a shortcut to get to the beach quicker.

People with Butler service got these amazing little blue coolers that they could take down to the beach with them. And their Butler’s would check in periodically and bring them frozen drinks and food, etc.

There were a lot of cabanas with two lounge chairs set up underneath throughout the whole beach. Not to mention, swings and hammocks as well.

Whenever I need to find a calm place in my mind, I will go back to this beach to take in the blue water and lapping waves.

This is one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen. We got back this week from our time at Sandals Emerald Bay. The vibe here is laid back and tranquil.

This resort is all Club or Butler level and some of the best service I have ever had in the Caribbean. Beautiful gardens everywhere, a fun pool with a swim-up bar, and lots of relaxing 😎.

Ok- we’ve officially been here for 24hrs and are never planning on leaving. This is some of the most beautiful water I have seen in the Bahamas. Stunning. The resort is great- intimate, walkable and so relaxing.

We ate dinner at Soy last night and had room service for breakfast. I don’t know if I have even been this relaxed. And the service is amazing to top all of off. Can’t wait to keep exploring!

I am getting super excited for my vacation to Sandals Emerald Bay! I am taking my own advice and using the Favorite Day Adventures all-inclusive packing list. We have to be up really early on Saturday so I’m starting to pack a little but pack the majority tomorrow.

I was just daydreaming about going - can’t believe it’s here! Here’s what I’m looking for ward to the most:

🏝️ turquoise water and white sands
🏊‍♀️ I also plan on spending some time at the swim-up bar
🐟 I am really looking forward to eating at Barefoot by the Sea for their fresh seafood
🍻 the Drunken Duck- I love an English pub and the are supposed to have amazing fish and chips
🥢 Soy! I definitely love sushi and it is and so indulgent to be able to get it before dinner- at no extra 💲
🐷 I am excited to swim with the pigs. This is a check off the bucket list for sure.

I am bringing a few good books as well. Can’t wait for this next Adventure!

So excited- in 1 week I will be traveling to Sandals Emerald Bay!!

We have always wanted to travel to the Exumas in the Bahamas 🇧🇸 because of the crystal clear water. And this is the most famous place to swim with the 🐷!
