Did you know that Maury County is steeped in intriguing history? Join us and Frank James, an infamous outlaw, for a journey back in time.

Frank James and his brother Jesse were notorious criminals during the American Civil War, robbing banks and trains across the land. Though they committed many heists, Frank claimed stealing a mule from a farm in Maury County, Tennessee triggered one of his closest calls with the law.

Frank described how in the early days of the Civil War, he and Jesse planned to capture President Abraham Lincoln. On his way to meet up with Jesse, Frank's horse gave out near Columbia, Tennessee. He searched nearby barns for a new ride and came across a shed filled with young mules, but Frank managed to find one older, gentle mule for his ride.

A few miles down the road, Frank heard an approaching group of horsemen. Not knowing if they were soldiers, he hid in the bushes. Around 50 riders passed him, clearly searching for someone. Suddenly, Frank's stolen mule let out a loud bray, attracting the riders. Frank took off into the dark night trying to escape his supposed captors; hearing dozens of hooves chase after him.

Soon Frank was surrounded by braying mules, not a rider to be found. They were the mules he had left in the shed. Frank realized the mules had tracked their missing leader, the mule he stole.

He laughed at how close he'd come to being caught, unaware it was not by soldiers but by a herd of mules. Frank recounted it as one of his closest calls, having nearly been scared to death by an unexpected group of braying mules in the dead of night. The farmer who owned the mules likely blamed their disappearance on Union soldiers that night, while the real culprit was Frank James on his way to capture President Lincoln.
