DAY #7 - RÜDESHEIM & THE RHINE RIVER GORGE

This was easily one of our favorite days with AmaWaterways on the Rhine River! Our first stop of the day was a visit to Siegfried’s Mechanical Music Cabinet, a fascinating museum in Rüdesheim showcasing a large collection of self-playing musical instruments. It was such a unique and entertaining way to start the day!

Afterwards, we braved the cold and wind for a beautiful gondola ride to the top of a hill overlooking Rüdesheim and the Rhine River. The views were absolutely worth it— like something out of a postcard!

Back in town, we explored the quaint streets and the Christmas market, which was just getting started for the season. We also took time to warm up with a cup of Rüdesheim Coffee, a delicious and famous drink.

In the afternoon, we returned to the ship for a German lunch before setting out on one of the most anticipated parts of the trip: cruising through the Rhine River Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking, even with the cold and snow. Towering cliffs, medieval castles, and charming villages lined the riverbanks, making it feel like we were cruising through a fairytale.

Our day ended with an evening excursion to Castle Lahneck, a 13th-century privately-owned castle full of history and charm. Exploring the candlelit halls felt like stepping back in time, and the experience was truly magical. Afterward, we returned to the ship for a delicious dinner and another relaxing evening onboard. We couldn’t have asked for a better way to experience the Rhine!

DAY #6- HEIDLEBERG AND RÜDESHEIM

I slacked on our river cruise recap, so want to finish over the next few days. Day 6 brought us to one of our favorite cities of the trip—Heidelberg, Germany! Known for its rich history, romantic charm, and as the home of Germany’s oldest university, Heidelberg is famous for its stunning castle and beautiful Old Town nestled along the Neckar River.

We chose the romantic castle excursion, which gave us the chance to explore the iconic Heidelberg Castle. Perched high above the city, the castle offered interesting history and breathtaking views. After taking in the history and scenery, we walked down the hillside into the charming city below.

Strolling through Heidelberg’s cobblestone streets was a treat, especially with the excitement of preparations for the city’s famous Christmas markets. One of the highlights was stepping into a stunning Christmas store—it felt like stepping into a Hallmark movie!

Later in the day, we returned to the ship and cruised toward Rüdesheim, Germany. After dinner, we had the option of several evening excursions, and we decided on a wine tasting with a local winemaker. It was such a fun and unique experience—a perfect way to end another beautiful day on the Rhine River.
