The rich history of Columbus is definitively Texan. From its early day as a Native American settlement to serving as the base campsite to General Sam Houston and his troops along the banks of the Colorado River during the Texas Revolution, to the days of shootouts in the streets and the rise and fall of cattle drives and cotton, Columbus played an important role in shaping Texas' history. Keeping

our heritage alive plays an important role in our way of life. We are proud of our roots and the fact so many of our historical buildings and homes are still around today. There's history seeping from every corner of our small town.

In 1845, the Kate Ward was the first steamboat to operate on the Colorado River, and in 1846, it went from Matagorda on the coast to Austin. It was able to carry 600 bales of cotton with a draft of three feet. Its last recorded use was in 1853. Part ownership was attributed to a Mr. Robinson of Columbus, but most likely it was Robert Robson, a Scotsman who had built a concrete castle on the Colorado River in Columbus. The castle was complete with running water, a ballroom, a roof garden, a moat, and drawbridge. It was said that guests from Bastrop to Matagorda attended parties held there, which would have been very convenient for someone who owned a steamboat. The foundation was undermined by a flood in 1869. The boat shown in the photograph is thought to be the ๐‘€๐‘œ๐‘๐‘๐‘Ž๐‘ ๐‘–๐‘› ๐ต๐‘’๐‘™๐‘™๐‘’, one of two smaller steamboats to ply the Colorado River. The anchor from the ๐‘€๐‘œ๐‘๐‘๐‘Ž๐‘ ๐‘–๐‘› ๐ต๐‘’๐‘™๐‘™๐‘’ is enshrined on the front lawn of the Tait House in Columbus, as steamboats stopped at Tait's Landing, south of Columbus. 1

The Columbus Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center enjoyed a visit from Writer and Photographer Sheryl Rodgers and her husband James and the bus group, Houston Deaf Senior Citizens. They paid a visit to the War Memorial Museum, the Santa Claus Museum, the Dilue Rose Harris House, the Alley Log Cabin and Tool Museum the Largest Live Oak Tree and the Colorado County Courthouse. It was a great day and our Docent Ester Chandler did a fabulous job.

Thanks for visiting us! Come back soon!

The Stafford Opera House is the only flat-floored opera house still in existence in Texas.

When it was originally built in 1886 by millionaire cattleman/banker Robert E. Stafford, the R.E. Stafford Bank and Opera House housed a bank and dry goods store on the first floor and theater venue on the second floor. The Grand Hall main floor originally sat 600 people with another 400 fitting in the balcony.

The last performance at the Stafford Opera House during that era was in 1916. In addition to a Ford dealership, the building has served as an arena for basketball games and boxing matches as well as a roller-skating rink. During the latter part of World War II, private apartments were built in the stage area of the second floor.

Troxell Ford - 1916-1944
Meyer Ford - 1944-1971
Don Morrison Ford - 1971-1972

In 1972, the Magnolia Homes Tour, Inc. (now the Columbus Historical Preservation Trust - CHPT) bought the property for $30,000 and began restoration efforts. 18 years and $1.3 million later, the Stafford Opera House was lovingly restored to its former glory and rededicated in 1990.

NOTE: The Stafford Opera House is currently not accepting tours. They are in the process of repairs to enhance and preserve this beautiful icon in Columbus.

Over the past year we've had many wonderful visitors from all over the great state of Texas and from far and wide stop in to visit our small town of Columbus, Texas. Our furthest visitor noted was from the Netherlands. Thanks to everyone who stopped in to visit, shop, eat, play and stay...hope to see you ALL back soon!!

Columbus isnโ€™t just another small town in Texasโ€ฆ itโ€™s something pretty special. In Columbus, you can grow and thrive. You can raise your family in a close-knit community where everyone looks out for one another. You can start and build your business in an economy where local businesses are the backbone of the community. Most of all, itโ€™s a place where youโ€™ll feel right at home. The smile and nod to neighbors on the street, the friendly wave to other drivers as you cross the river bridge, and the laughter of kids with ice cream cones as they play under century-old live oaks.

Columbus is a little slice of Americana with deep Texas roots. You wonโ€™t spend too long here before you realize why weโ€™re so special. Come see for yourself. We look forward to meeting you.
