I had heard from the President of the Tilton Historical Society that they had original granite posts that had been in front of the State House so I went to Tilton to see them!
What a thrill to learn about the history of what brought them to Tilton.
In June of 1833, Samuel took his young son, Charles Elliott Tilton, to Concord to see President Andrew Jackson, who came to address the crowd. Charles was only 5 years old at the time, and in order to have a better look, his father put him up on the top of one of the granite posts. That moment left such a great memory with Charles, that when he grew up and heard that the State House was redoing the front of the property, he was able to purchase the post he sat on, and 3 others, and erect them at his home.
The Tilton Mansion is intriguing and I encourage everyone to learn about the Tilton family.
