Today in Davidson history…January 18, 1914…at approximately 8:30pm, southbound train 15 on the AT&O Railroad was getting ready to make a stop at the Davidson depot when the train suddenly derailed. Two railroad employees lost their lives as a result.

The wreck was initially blamed on 9 year old Rufus Hall who may or may not have placed an errant spike on the rail earlier that day. Years later Hall would meet his own gruesome demise.

This incident would kick off the deadliest year in Davidson history.

Today in Davidson history…January 15 1903

Medical students John Boyce and Richard McLeod were dissecting a cadaver when Boyce accidentally cut himself with the sharp dissection tool. Within 24 hours he and McLeod would both start showing signs of blood poisoning. McLeod later realized he had an abrasion on the back of his hand from an incident playing football days earlier.

Both young men would be admitted to the infirmary and fight for their lives for the next two weeks. Only one would make it. To be continued…

*The North Carolina Medical College was located in Davidson from 1893-1907 when it moved to Charlotte. It was a separate institution from Davidson College but shared many resources.

Today in Davidson history…the death of college student William “Arnie” Goetchius in 1894.

I’ve often mentioned the many strange occurrences associated with the “Old Chambers” building. Here is one more…

New Year’s Day 1894, Arnie and several other classmates decided to go ice skating in the evening. Arnie reportedly ran upstairs to his third floor dorm room in Chambers to grab his skates. With the hall and stairwell being dark, he somehow ran into and fell over the railing on his way back down, falling three stories and receiving significant injuries.

Fellow students carried him to the infirmary where everything was done to try to save his life. He never came out of unconsciousness and passed away on January 5, 1894. Arnie is buried in the student section of the Davidson College Cemetery.

First pic is a newspaper article from his hometown and second pic is a tribute in the Davidson College 1895 yearbook - the year when he would have graduated.

Today in Davidson history…December 21, 1912 the death of Julia Holt at 72. Mrs. Holt was a beloved member of the Davidson community and was well known for taking in student boarders. She and her husband Dr. William Holt (one of our first town doctors) were the first known residents of what is now known as the “Copeland House” on North Main St.

Her obituary, published in the Charlotte Observer, noted that “Mrs. Holt is remembered by generations of students, who have through all these years, even into the session of 1912-13, enjoyed the hospitality of her home and fireside. A motherly, warm, Christian heart beat always within her breast and her kindliness to all of her wide acquaintance was almost proverbial.”

Mrs. Holt is seen sitting in the front of this photo surrounded by family at her home in December 1909 on the occasion of her daughter’s wedding. She is still seen regularly in her home either looking out the window or the front door. Second photo is a zoomed in photo of the front door taken August 2024 on the weekend students arrived back on the Davidson college campus. I believe she is still watching over them ❤️👻
