In 2023, over half of U.S. states recognized Juneteenth as an official public holiday. Influenced by this number, efforts to elevate Juneteenth to the status of an official public holiday in New Hampshire are underway. Local activists, community leaders, and legislators recognize the importance of formally acknowledging this critical day in American history.

A senate bill sponsored by Senator Rebecca Perkins Kwoka, D-Portsmouth, sought to establish June 19, Juneteenth, as an annual state holiday in New Hampshire, along with other holidays such as Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and Independence Day. NH SB481 was passed by the Senate by voice vote on April 11, 2024. However, it was voted Inexpedient to Legislate in May 2024 and did not move forward.

The journey toward making Juneteenth an official holiday in New Hampshire is reflective of the state’s broader struggle for racial justice and equity. As New Hampshire grows more diverse, the recognition of Juneteenth as an official state holiday represents an opportunity for the Granite State to “walk the talk” of its commitments to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). If passed, this would be a significant step toward a more inclusive and equitable society, where all voices are heard and celebrated.

The New Hampshire Center for Justice and Equity fully supports this transition, as it would provide a platform for education, reflection, and celebration, ensuring that the legacy of Juneteenth continues to inspire future generations. Through these efforts, residents of New Hampshire can contribute to a movement that honors the past, acknowledges the present, and looks forward to a future where freedom and equality are truly for all. Despite the lack of official recognition, many local groups have important events planned for Juneteenth.

Discover the history and significance of Juneteenth, its federal recognition, and ongoing efforts to make it an official holiday in New Hampshire.

More than 250,000 African Americans embraced freedom by executive decree in what became known as Juneteenth or Freedom Day.

I Wandered Off-The-Beaten-Path And Discovered This Lovely Forest Walk In New Hampshire

I’m blessed to live in an area where there are many hiking trails and walking paths to enjoy. I frequently take midday breaks to get out and enjoy these trails. The time spent on them may not be long but they provide a needed distraction from daily tasks that recharges me. One of these trails that I’ve recently discovered is the N’dakinna Trail in Loudon (roughly translated from the native Abenaki, N’dakinna means “Our Homeland.”). It’s only a mile long but is perfect for a getaway into nature when time is short.

This secluded trail in Loudon is perfect for a brief dose of natural rejuvenation and a nice distraction from daily life.

Considering their handiwork — a sculpture of the New Hampshire State House in wool — this was no ordinary knitting circle.

On Saturday at The Elegant Ewe, a knitting and crocheting supply store on South Main Street, four women from around the state — Lindsay Levesque of Keene, Maryjane Krepper of Concord, Kathy Gallagher of Franklin and Nancy Cayford of Dublin — and their leader, Eva Jacobs-Carnahan, of Montpelier, Vermont, stitched together roughly 175 6-inch-by-6-inch squares fabricated by close to 200 adults and school children from Conway to Keene.

The woolen replica of the New Hampshire State House, including a knitted gold dome, will be placed in the State Library on June 4, with an opening reception the following week.

If you live in New Hampshire like I do (or have ever visited here), you know our natural scenery, mountains, and rural landscapes are most commonly enjoyed when viewed from the traditional perspective of your car or camper. The historic Plummer Ridge School House, circa 1801, is coming to its new home at the New Hampshire Farm Museum. This one room schoolhouse is less than a mile from the NHFM. The Plummer and Jones children attended school here until the doors closed in 1911. Plans are in the works now to raise funds for moving it. We would be so grateful if you would consider helping and sending a donation to The New Hampshire Farm Museum, P.O.Box 644, Milton, NH 03851. Please write : Schoolhouse in the memo portion of your check. Thank you so much for any donation that you can contribute to our fundraiser!!!! This can’t happen without your help!!!!🌻🌻🌻💛

This Is The Most New Hampshire Sound You'll Ever Hear, And We Can't Stop Listening To It

One of the reasons I spend so much time outdoors in nature is to revel in the quiet. No traffic noise, no cell phone beeps, no crowds of people. It’s time to immerse myself in an environment that is not mine but rather belongs to the wildlife that lives here. It’s their world and we are just the visitors. Sometimes these local residents make their presence known, and it’s pretty cool when they do. One of my favorite sounds of nature is the unique call of the barred owl. Even from a distance, it’s an unmistakable signal that all is that it should be in the woods.

These magnificent birds of prey are not only opportunistic hunters, but also emit a call that is a delight to hear.

The New Hampshire Book Festival is thrilled to welcome bestselling author Jean Hanff Korelitz for an evening of literary conversation about her captivating new thriller𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗹, the follow-up to her blockbuster 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗹𝗼𝘁, which Stephen King called “insanely readable.”

Tickets go on sale Tuesday, May 28 at 12 pm, and include a first-edition hardcover copy of THE SEQUEL (Oct. 1, 2024, Celadon Books). For more information: https://www.nhbookfestival.org/tickets-1

All ticket sales support the inaugural New Hampshire Book Festival, which brings acclaimed authors from across the country to Concord, NH, for a free day of conversations and discussions.

As 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗹 opens, Anna Williams-Bonner has taken care of business. That is to say, she’s taken care of her husband, bestselling novelist Jacob Finch Bonner, and laid to rest those anonymous accusations of plagiarism that so tormented him. Now she is living the contented life of a literary widow, enjoying her husband’s royalty checks in perpetuity, but for the second time in her life, a work of fiction intercedes, and this time it’s her own debut novel, The Afterword. After all, how hard can it really be to write a universally lauded bestseller?

But when Anna publishes her book and indulges in her own literary acclaim, she begins to receive excerpts of a novel she never expected to see again, a novel that should no longer exist. That it does means something has gone very wrong, and someone out there knows too much: about her late brother, her late husband, and just possibly... Anna, herself. What does this person want and what are they prepared to do? She has come too far, and worked too hard, to lose what she values most: the sole and uncontested right to her own story. And she is, by any standard, a master storyteller.

With her signature wit and sardonic humor, Jean Hanff Korelitz gives readers an antihero to root for while illuminating and satirizing the world of publishing in this deliciously fun and suspenseful read.

Get Off The Freeway And Onto This Scenic Back Road Between Plymouth And Haverhill, New Hampshire

When the interstate highway system was first developed, it was a boon for automobile travelers looking to easily expand their horizons beyond their local area. Sure, the freeways give us a way to get from one destination to another quickly, but most times there isn’t anything interesting to see as you’re whizzing by at high speed. To see the more interesting stuff, you need to need to do what I do and get off the major highways and onto the secondary byways for a back road drive in New Hampshire like this one along Route 25.

Get off the interstate for a pleasant journey through small towns, visits to interesting attractions, and views of natural scenery.

Today I interviewed Becky Whitley! Senator Whitley is a NH State Senator for the 15th District. She has devoted herself to helping women, children, and working families as a disability rights lawyer, climate organizer and community activist, child health policy expert, and State Senator. She’s worked to improve New Hampshire’s Medicaid programs for better maternal and infant health outcomes. She also considers herself a champion for reproductive freedom here in the State. Senator Whitley is now running for United States Congress in CD2.
