For some, the first Monday of September serves as the end of the summer and one last long weekend before fall. For us, it's time to stop and think about the American labor movement and all of the contributions of laborers not just in the past but in present day, as well (fun fact: Canada's Labour Day is also celebrated on the first Monday in September). The odd-looking, but very effective Smatchet was the brainchild of William Fairbairn (who also co-developed the Fairbairn-Sykes Fighting Knife) during WWII for the OSS (Office of Strategic Services) and British SAS (Special Air Service) for use on clandestine missions behind enemy lines. There were many variations in the grip and pommel, but the basic specifications never changed. Our reproduction is based on an original piece loaned to us by a very generous collector (we matched it detail to detail). Despite the waning effectiveness of plate armor against the increasing proficiency of fi****ms, the French cavalry in Napoleon’s army still wore cuirasses with mixed success. They were mildly useful (emphasis on “mildly”) for deflecting long range musket and pistol fire, but when combined with an ornate, gorgon headed helmet that featured plumes and horse-tail hair, the Cuirassier’s battle dress created quite an imposing figure as he charged into the fray. Surviving accounts from British opponents attest to the petrifying spectacle of compact groups of Cuirassiers emerging from behind the French front lines.

This heavy cavalry saber is what a Cuirassier would carry, as the French favored thrusting weapons over slashing or cutting.

In 1836 Texas, having won its independence from Mexico, formed the Republic of Texas. In 1839, the Texas Government contracted with Ames Mfg. Co. for 280 M1833 “Texas” Dragoon Sabers. This replica saber is exactly like the M1833, except for the blade inscription, which has “TEXAS DRAGOONS” in script. A unique piece of US wartime history.
