We LOVE Sunrises on the beach! So do our 4 legged friends! Our house is pet friendly. You donāt have to leave your furry family member at home when you stay at our house. Come enjoy the 4x4 with us! We are almost all booked but have 2 available weeks left.
Itās a beautiful day on the 4x4! We had to stop for a moment to share some pictures. The sky is a clear blue, just a little nip in the air, and the horses are out enjoying a little snack. We hope everyone is having a great weekend! š
Remodeling is underway! We pulled up carpet. The sand under the carpet could have filled a sandbox! We have started laying Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring throughout the 2nd floor bedroom area. Just some of the improvements we are making this offseason! Keep following us to see more! š

Happy Fall!!! We LOVE the Fall & the off season in the OBX. The weather is beautiful, not too hot, not too cold, just right! The landscapes always offer gorgeous sights for sunrises, sunsets & in the 4x4 horses.
As we are closing out the 2022 season & looking forward to the 2023 season we are excited to announce that our home will change to a Friday turnover day!!! Come on Fridayās and beat the bridge traffic coming & going!
Hereās some important information about one of the wild horses out here on the 4x4 beach.
Weāve been getting a ton of calls about two year old mare Alma - hopefully this post will help answer some questions and spread the word about what everyone can do to help us ensure she stays safe, healthy, and wild.
Of particular note, as you can see from the photo Alma has wounds on both sides of her face, probably from being bit. Our vet has been consulted and has advised that they are clean and healing well, and not anything to be too worried about. We will continue to remain in close contact with our vet but there is no reason at this point to be concerned for Almaās physical well-being.
Earlier this spring, Alma was pushed out of the harem she born into. The stallion (who is most likely her father, but DNA will confirm) became aggressive towards her and would not let her get close to the rest of the mares. Alma is often alone on the beach and to human observers seems lost, which is understandably concerning. It may be difficult to see, but we have to remember that these are wild horses behaving naturally. Itās what eventually happens to each and every young horse, though Almaās situation is a little unique.
Almaās family lives in an area with a low population of horses - itās just them for over a mile. Normally, a mare thatās pushed out of her harem would quickly be scooped up by another stallion but there just arenāt any other harems close by for Alma to assimilate into. The good news is she finally seems to be migrating north, towards more densely populated areas. We are keeping our fingers crossed that she comes across a welcoming group soon.
What we are most concerned about is the fact that Alma seems to be getting increasingly habituated. Sheās been approaching and following people, and is getting very close to vehicles. We are asking that all visitors please do everything possible to discourage this behavior if you happen to encounter Alma. Get into your vehicle, wave your arms around to scare her away from you, and definitely do not pet her or give her any positive attention at all. We want Alma to be completely disinterested in humans - afraid of them, even. She is in a very vulnerable position right now, where she is young, impressionable, and unfortunately alone. We want her to be seeking out the company of other horses, not people.
As we head into another busy turnover weekend, please do us a favor if you are coming to the 4x4 and help us keep Alma wild. Her genes are invaluable to the herd and her removal due to habituation would be a devastating blow. We canāt afford to lose another young horse from the wild. Alma is healthy and in excellent physical shape, she just needs some time to mature and figure out how to be a grownup horse. If weāre going to share space with these horses and expect them to remain wild, we all have to be active participants in their management. Please give her plenty of space and help us ensure she stays wild and free for the rest of her life.
Local business recommendation #1! The The Chicken Coop Country Diner is a local, family-owned and run, diner located on the pavement right next to OBGAS. They are constantly updating and adding to their menu, but one thing that never changes is their chicken sandwich! Every time we are in the Outer Banks, we always make sure to stop by for breakfast, lunch, or dinner at least once (itās never just onceš). Grab a bucket of their fried chicken for the family before heading to the beach, or try one of their other menu options. You wonāt be disappointed!
It is the beginning of May, meaning it is officially sea turtle nesting season in the Outer Banks! At night, female turtles typically crawl to the dune line in order to dig their nest and lay their eggs. Turtles are very nearsighted so we are asking that if you are staying in the Outer Banks during nesting season, you turn off outside lights at night, and avoid using flashlights or flash photography. (Bonus! No outside lights at night=less bugs hanging around your porch!) If you come across an unmarked nest, stay a minimum of 20 ft away, make note of the location, and contact N.E.S.T. (Network for Endangered Sea Turtles). Their 24 hr hotline is (252) 441-8622. If the mother turtle is still there, follow above instructions as well as making sure you donāt stand in front of the nest. On land, turtles are disoriented and we donāt want to scare them back into the ocean before their nest is complete. If you are lucky enough to see a nest hatch, do not interfere! Stay back (not in front) and enjoy watching what is called a āsea turtle boilā! It is illegal to harass or injure a sea turtle. Remember, sea turtles are endangered species and we want to protect them so the species can one day thrive again!
We want to give a shout out to our contractors who helped make our vision possible! We couldnāt have done it without Cancilla, contractor & Daniel T. Myers III who did our flooring. We canāt recommend these guys enough! They went above and beyond for us and we are so thankful.
Our main renovation this year was the kitchen, but we did add new flooring throughout the main level! We finished all of these renovations just in time for our first renters of the season who arrive today! Time for another kitchen update! We are so close to being finished with our new kitchen! So far, weāve painted the cabinets and had new granite countertops delivered (by crane!). Still to come are new appliances and flooring! We only have a few weeks still available, so check the link in our bio and reserve a week to see the kitchen for yourself!!
