Rough waves cause beach erosion and may leave steep escarpments and sand ledges that can drop off a foot or more. A vehicle can be damaged or roll over if the driver isn’t cautious. Be alert when driving, especially at night.

Do you know what this is? It has the potential to be very dangerous!

After storms or strong tides, signal flares may wash up on our beach. These flares may still contain phosphorous and other chemicals that can be deadly if inhaled or touched.

If you see a cylinder like this on the beach strand:
(1) Do not touch or move the flare.

(2) Immediately move away a safe distance upwind.

(3) Call 9-1-1 and report it. Provide the closest mile marker and a description of the location.

Great info for rules/laws for driving on the beach and important dates to remember!

For those renting, I will have passes available at the house for your use while you are there!

Vehicles are required to use driving lanes adjacent to the dune line between Milepost 14.5 and Milepost 17 from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. beginning the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Rocket Lab's next launch from Wallops is scheduled for this Saturday, March 11, with a window of 6-8 p.m. EST.

Our Wallops Visitor Center will not be open for this mission, but there are plenty of other local viewing locations to check out. The launch, weather permitting, may be visible to those along the East Coast.

Airing down your tires is the single most important thing you can do to avoid issues driving on the beach! Thank you to Carova Beach Volunteer Fire & Rescue for posting this pic a while back that illustrates the reason it makes such a difference. personally- I air down to 15/16 from 36 psi and (so far) it has been perfect! It also helps keep our sand “roads” in mbetter shape. Please if you are visiting the Corolla 4x4 beaches, air down prior to the end of the pavement, there are signs to direct you to when and where it’s safe to stop and do so.

Everyone welcome our newest baby! Did you know all of the c**ts born this year have names that start with “C”. Please don’t forget to stay AT LEAST 50 feet away- and give mamas and babies more space if you can! I’ve always been scared of horses, but wow; what majestic animals they are! ❤️

This c**t was born sometime between Thursday night and early yesterday afternoon. He is big, strong, and healthy, and his experienced parents are doing fine too. It’s not uncommon for there to be a couple fall babies born every year - we still have a few months of warm weather ahead of us and our winters are generally pretty temperate. Nothing to worry about there.

Please remember to give foals and their families plenty of space. Mom and baby need time to bond and recover from birth, and stallions (especially this little one’s dad) can be aggressively protective. The herd faces so many challenges that we do not have control over; please do not harm the horses by breaking the rules that are in place to keep you and them safe.

Tropical Storm Colin seems to have made a right turn out to sea- but we will get lots of (needed) rain and some wind this afternoon. The surf is much rougher today- but we definitely have some gorgeous sunshine- the calm before the storm. Locals say it’s rain with a name- nothing to worry about 😎

Please please read through- Alma needs our help- by doing NOTHING!

We’ve been getting a ton of calls about two year old mare Alma - hopefully this post will help answer some questions and spread the word about what everyone can do to help us ensure she stays safe, healthy, and wild.

Of particular note, as you can see from the photo Alma has wounds on both sides of her face, probably from being bit. Our vet has been consulted and has advised that they are clean and healing well, and not anything to be too worried about. We will continue to remain in close contact with our vet but there is no reason at this point to be concerned for Alma’s physical well-being.

Earlier this spring, Alma was pushed out of the harem she born into. The stallion (who is most likely her father, but DNA will confirm) became aggressive towards her and would not let her get close to the rest of the mares. Alma is often alone on the beach and to human observers seems lost, which is understandably concerning. It may be difficult to see, but we have to remember that these are wild horses behaving naturally. It’s what eventually happens to each and every young horse, though Alma’s situation is a little unique.

Alma’s family lives in an area with a low population of horses - it’s just them for over a mile. Normally, a mare that’s pushed out of her harem would quickly be scooped up by another stallion but there just aren’t any other harems close by for Alma to assimilate into. The good news is she finally seems to be migrating north, towards more densely populated areas. We are keeping our fingers crossed that she comes across a welcoming group soon.

What we are most concerned about is the fact that Alma seems to be getting increasingly habituated. She’s been approaching and following people, and is getting very close to vehicles. We are asking that all visitors please do everything possible to discourage this behavior if you happen to encounter Alma. Get into your vehicle, wave your arms around to scare her away from you, and definitely do not pet her or give her any positive attention at all. We want Alma to be completely disinterested in humans - afraid of them, even. She is in a very vulnerable position right now, where she is young, impressionable, and unfortunately alone. We want her to be seeking out the company of other horses, not people.

As we head into another busy turnover weekend, please do us a favor if you are coming to the 4x4 and help us keep Alma wild. Her genes are invaluable to the herd and her removal due to habituation would be a devastating blow. We can’t afford to lose another young horse from the wild. Alma is healthy and in excellent physical shape, she just needs some time to mature and figure out how to be a grownup horse. If we’re going to share space with these horses and expect them to remain wild, we all have to be active participants in their management. Please give her plenty of space and help us ensure she stays wild and free for the rest of her life.
