Rip currents are powerful, channeled currents of water flowing away from shore. They typically extend from the shoreline, through the surf zone, and past the line of breaking waves.

They are found on almost any beach with breaking waves and act as “rivers of the sea,” moving sand, marine organisms and other material offshore.

Certain wave, tide and beach shape conditions can increase rip currents to dangerous speeds. People get in trouble when they are moved so far offshore that they are unable to get back to the beach because of fear, panic, exhaustion or inefficient swimming skills.

Lifeguards are trained to identify these hazards. Always swim at a lifeguarded beach and ask a lifeguard about the conditions before entering the water.

It's sea turtle nesting season!

🐢 The first sea turtle nest of the season was found over the weekend by park biologists! The nest was found near Frisco on Saturday, May 11th and was a Loggerhead (Caretta caretta) sea turtle.

Do you think we will have another busy nesting season?

The sea turtles were busy last summer, and so were our staff! With 380 total nests, 2023 was the seashore’s 2nd highest recorded nesting year (2019 was the highest on record with 473 nests total).

A few other records were broken in 2023, too:

- Highest number of Green turtle nests recorded in a nesting season (52).
- First successful Leatherback nest hatch since 2007.
- Highest number of false crawls recorded (456).
- Latest sea turtle nest found for the seashore and the state (December 3rd, 2023).

Welcome, Ezra!

Join us in welcoming the newest member of the herd, a c**t named Ezra. He was born about a week ago to a very experienced mother and both are in excellent condition. All of this mare's other foals have been black with no markings so we were excited to see that this little guy was not only chestnut, but also has a star on his forehead. Color and markings make absolutely no difference to the horses, but they sure make it easier for us to identify them when they're older. 😉

If you are lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the family, please remember to stay at least 50ft away from them at all times regardless of whether you're on foot or in a vehicle. Crowding them can cause unnecessary stress and can also habituate the foal during this very critical stage of his development. Causing a traffic jam around the horses is dangerous for them, other drivers, and pedestrians - please be sensible, respectful, and law-abiding if you are driving on the beach this spring and summer.

Ezra is the third foal born in 2024. The first was Eros, a c**t born in February, and there is one other foal that we estimate to be about a month old. We have not yet been able to determine if it's a c**t or a filly. That group lives primarily in the marsh and we do not see them often, but they did bring the foal out to the beach very briefly one afternoon a couple weeks ago. Mom and foal both look healthy, which is the most important thing!

Guess who’s back, back again? Yes, it’s us, tell a friend! 💁‍♀️ (No seriously, share this post to help spread awareness about the dangers of digging large holes on the beach.)

Today alone, our ocean rescue supervisor responded to THREE large holes dug/left on our beach. (Yes, you read that right, three in one day - and it's only March!) 🤦

We cannot stress this enough, 𝗗𝗜𝗚𝗚𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗟𝗔𝗥𝗚𝗘 𝗛𝗢𝗟𝗘𝗦 𝗢𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗕𝗘𝗔𝗖𝗛 𝗜𝗦 𝗘𝗫𝗧𝗥𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗟𝗬 𝗗𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗘𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗦❗️ Sand collapses occur in holes just a few feet deep. NEVER dig a hole deeper than it is wide. Children and adults should not dig holes deeper than their knees when standing in them.

Why are they dangerous?
🦈 Did you know that national statistics comparing sand hole collapses to shark attacks confirms that 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮 𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗽𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗮 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗸.

👨‍⚕️ No one goes to the beach expecting to leave with a broken ankle or worse. Sand holes can cause numerous injuries to other beach-goers.

🚑 Sand holes make it challenging for first responders to quickly get to an emergency on the beach, and they can cause damage to the responder's vehicles and create a secondary emergency.

🐢 Who doesn’t love cute little sea turtles?! Sand holes can trap hatchlings and their mother, which can result in a fatal ending.

We recommend leaving any digging to the little ghost crabs 🦀 However, if you do dig a hole on the beach, ONLY dig shallow holes and ALWAYS fill it in once you're finished. Help keep everyone on our beaches safe, including yourself.

New this year! We have hired a top notch maintenance team that will respond to all of your inquiries/requests for assistance far sooner than when you use a larger company.

They service a select number of homes in Corolla which enables a super fast response time. They also walk through the house before each new renter arrives to ensure everything is in great shape for your family. You will have Mike's cell phone to reach out if anything pops up during the week.

We know your time at the beach is meant to be spent relaxing so we are excited to offer this new service to ensure you maximize your family time!

I have to admit, converting our carport into an outdoor rec room was entirely Darlene's idea. Her team at Sanctuary Design Co. blew us away with this metamorphosis! We have also added Scrabble and Connect 4 as wall games.

This outdoor rec room gives the kids their own place to hang out and have fun and preserves the peace and quiet for the adults inside. =)
