Last night.
The sound of the ocean scours the stress from your brain to make a brand new shiny you.

Day 6: Dusk after a busy day of fixing up for your visit. We added a little color out front. Feel free to donate a pitcher of water on your way by. The yard has been w**d whacked around the whips of native ‘ornamental’ grass and the stately yucca stalks. Here stands Alan after his yard clean up and ready for a bike ride. ( bikes can be rented locally)
It is Tuesday night and the trash containers are out for Wednesday morning pick up as I start out for my days end walk to the Atlantic admiring the gardens on the way. We sit listening to the surf. It is a lazy ocean tonight with small waves breaking near the beach and slowly advancing on the dry sand as the tide comes in. Another section F visitor passes us flashlight in hand on her way to watch the little crabs scurry down their little holes. You do not see them during the day AT ALL. We see little flashes as she takes pictures of the critters she surprises. I remember how delighted our 2 year old grandson was when he first came hunting the crabs 3 years ago.
This is the quiet Outer Banks and one of my favorite traditions. I particularly like walking on the beach as the moon rises. No moon tonight. On the way home I see the first star of the night over the back side of Ocean’s DeeLight.
Good Night.

Historic Corolla Park and the School : Once upon a time when the industrial revolution and the robber Barron’s dominated like dinosaurs stomping the Earth. The Outer Banks were barrier island accessible only by boat. Because there were shifting sandbars, shipping lanes, and yes even pirates (!!!) the Outer Banks required lighthouses. The one shown here is in Old Corolla Village. Well it wasn’t called that at first but that is a story for another day. Light house keepers lived in the area with their families and eventually a school was established.
The rich industrialists liked the Outer Banks for getting away from the hustle and bustle of creating railroads and cars and such factories etc. So hunt Clubs were established to shoot ducks and fish and such. The locals became guides and boatmen. That’s where the Whale Head Club comes in. These beautiful grounds surrounded the lovely hunting ‘mansion’ pictured here. We have enjoyed July 4th fireworks, quiet sunsets, and guided tours of the house with its artistic period decors in the area of the newly named Historic Corolla Park. The park is open to the public at no charge and often hosts county sponsored festivals and other activities. Back to the school in present time.
The Waters Edge Village School is now a charter school serving the Northern Outer Banks and meets in the historic Village Schoolhouse. The community room at Corolla Capel is part of the school too as is the Wildlife Museum. We have actually attended class at the museum with the school children.
The year round community is pretty tight knit.

Day 4: Mother’s Day at the Corolla Chappell in historic old Corolla starts our 4th day off. From the door way you can see the Pellican stained glass window. This interesting congregation has a small group of year around families and a larger extended family of Summer worshipers and visitors. Their community involvement includes bikes and fellowship for the small army of foreign students that work here during the vacation season.
On the way home we stop at the public access beach. With handicapped parking and ramps to the sand this is truly an all access beach. It is close to the chapel and the lighthouse.
To finish the evening up it’s a trip to Kill Devil Hills and the Jolly Rodger. There is a tradition of pirates as the barrier islands were an historical home to famous and infamous pirates. There is also a tradition of silliness. Jolly Rodger embraces both of these as well as fabulous Italian food. They were offering 75% off for Mother’s dinners when accompanied by families.
The decor, the gift shop and the cartoon seascapes of the restrooms are silly. The food was fabulous.
The sky was blue the high was 81 and the cool breeze was constant.

Day 3: We have a guest book at Ocean’s DeeLight which we read when ever we visit. One place often mentioned is DUCK DONUTS. Apparently this is a favorite early morning run which you could literally run or walk to each morning. It is just across US 12 from section F of Ocean Sands where Ocean’s delight is nestled among the beach houses.
Next stop this morning is the Visitor’s Center, a must visit. Here are more ideas for vacation fun than you could possibly act on if you had a month of vacation.
If you are a drinking group the ABC STOORE is also a must stop as this is how you buy liquor in North Carolina. Beer and wine are at the grocery.

Day 2 in May. High 70s and few people on the beach. The tide is turning and the days sand castle and settlement is about to be wiped out. Come to Ocean’s DeeLight and enjoy this beach. Call for information. 614-337-1744.

It is May and beautiful at the Outer Banks. We are fixing up and touching up to get ready for the rental season. The bridge over to the string of barrier islands known as the Outer Banks is getting a sprucing up too. During the peak season Saturday arrival traffic is heavy. That’s why we rent from Sunday to Sunday during the peak season.”
I get really excited when I see the Duck water tower. We creep through at 25 mph. During the season the roadside is teaming with vacationers and it is easy to remember to go slow. Although we have a ways to go before our Corolla address I feel invested in this lovely town too. No kidding. Late one fall night I was returning from rehearsal in Delaware, Ohio to our OBX ODL home. It was about 10 PM and Duck seemed deserted. Deserted except for me and THE DUCK POLICE. Reminder: the speed limit in Duck is 25 mph ALL YEAR LONG. Soon after that I invested in Duck to the toon of a couple hundred dollars. I think they spent it wisely. It is a very nice town. You must visit it when you are here. In fact you need to drive through just to get to Ocean’s DeeLight.🙋
