RIP bullwinkle😢🐴

At 11:30pm on Friday, July 26 we received a 911 call that a horse who had been standing on the beach was struck by a vehicle. The incident was witnessed and reported by a visitor who had been surf fishing at the time. No other horses were injured. The driver of the vehicle was arrested.

The horse that was hit was 10-year-old stallion Bullwinkle, and the injuries he sustained were as follows:

-Significant skin trauma over the right side and back.

-Broken right hind leg with fracture of the lower femur.

-Left hind trauma and lateral destabilization of the hock with collateral ligament injuries, allowing the leg to bow outwards.

-Pendulous abdomen when standing and once euthanized fluid-filled abdomen confirmed with a fluid wave of manipulation, likely due to significant internal trauma and blood within the abdomen.

Bullwinkle’s injuries were severe and ultimately fatal. Our veterinarian arrived on the scene early Saturday morning to humanely euthanize him.

On Thursday, we posted a video of two stallions fighting and told the story of how the challenging stallion had been vying for the other stallion’s mares for several weeks. The challenging stallion was Bullwinkle. He was in the prime of his life, and went from being a symbol of what it means to be wild and free to a tragic example of how irresponsible, reckless human behavior can cause pain, suffering, and irreparable damage to the herd in an instant. Bullwinkle will never produce any foals. His genetics are gone from the herd forever and with such a small, endangered population the ramifications of that will last for generations.

Bullwinkle died as wild as he lived; at no point did he welcome our intervention and he remained wary and defensive even as he laid on the dune unable to stand anymore. The fight drive that he was always known for never left him, right up to the end. He was exactly what a wild Banker stallion is supposed to be, and we are glad that he at least never had to leave the beach - he was never meant to. He was buried at the edge of the meadow where the video from Thursday was filmed. There is not much comfort that can be found in anything about this tragic incident, but we are at least grateful that we could help him pass without further suffering and provide him with the respectful and dignified burial he deserved.

We’d like to thank everyone who helped us Friday night and Saturday morning, especially the visitor who called 911. Otherwise there would have been no consequences for the driver, we would have never known what happened, and Bullwinkle may have suffered for longer than he did. Thank you to our community who came together to help us that night and into the day on Saturday, to the Currituck County sheriff’s department for their quick response and on-going support, and to our staff and veterinarian for their unending dedication to always doing what’s best for the horses.

Please be aware of the horses today. It’s going to be a hot one out there☀️🐴

It is going to be extremely hot today. If you see horses on the beach it’s because they are trying to find relief from the heat and biting flies. Please do not crowd them, chase them, or harass them in any way. These rules apply at all times, but are especially important to remember today. Heat stress can lead to serious, potentially fatal health complications. Please be safe out there today! 🏖️

Save the turtles🐢🐢🐢

Exciting news!!!
N.E.S.T. has just installed signs on the Carova and Swan beaches in Currituck County. The signs encourage drivers to lookout for sea turtles and the volunteers who help protect them. Both are often on the beach at night, so it’s especially important for drivers to be aware.
Thanks to the great team of N.E.S.T. volunteers who made this happen!

Just something to be aware of…

Please, please, please, ALWAYS stay 50ft from the wild horses and report anything to the number below you see!!
07/02/2023

Please, please, please, ALWAYS stay 50ft from the wild horses and report anything to the number below you see!!

So this just happened. 🤯😡 A couple things:

1. We’ve had several horses literally kill each other in the course of normal, natural, daily wild horse life over the last couple months. If they can do that to each other, what do you think they could do to you? Or your toddler? This is unbelievably dangerous and stupid. The law states keep 50ft away for a reason - your own safety. There are signs EVERYWHERE. Ignorance is no longer an excuse.

2. Thank you to the multiple people who reached out to report this incident. We appreciate it - it takes a village and when you saw something, you said something! The sheriff’s department was contacted and our staff was dispatched to the area.

3. Please do not solely rely on Facebook messenger or groups to report incidents like this. If you witness this, you need to call the sheriff’s department immediately. The number is 252-453-3633, and if you can’t remember that, just dial 911. There are many reasons why this is important…

First of all, this is a law enforcement situation. These people deserved a citation and only a deputy can do that. If you witness it, your photos and information are critical and you need to be the one to report it.

Secondly, it is a direct line to CWHF no matter the time of day. I can’t always monitor Facebook messages 24/7 but unless I am in a coma I am going to answer 100% of the time when dispatch calls me (and to be honest, my ringtone is Raymond braying so it would probably wake me up out of a coma 😉). Calling dispatch means that law enforcement can do their job and we can do ours, all in the most efficient, streamlined way. Time is really of the essence in situations like this.

Hopefully this is a lesson to everyone who visits the beach that our community is watching and we are all invested in keeping these horses wild and free, and keeping you safe. Behavior like this will be reported and there are consequences for your actions. Please be respectful and follow the rules - many lives depend on it!

Welcome the newest foal, Donner🐴

Welcome the newest foal, Donner🐴

As it is wont to do, the world keeps turning. 🌈🐎

This perfect little c**t was born on Monday and we’ve been keeping it quiet since his parents have been staying back in the woods out of sight. But some good news would be nice right about now. So, join us in welcoming foal #4 to the herd! He was born as thunderstorms were rolling into the area so we’ve chosen the name Donner (thunder) for him. His mother is very experienced and both she and Donner are in great shape. With the exception of Drum, 2023 seems to be the year of the chestnuts so far!

Please remember to give all the horses, but especially foals, plenty of space. They need time and room to bond with their families and learn the rules of the wild. Foals are impressionable and can habituate quickly so it’s important to admire them from a distance. These horses face so many natural challenges that we can’t control, so it’s critical that we humans don’t make things unnecessarily hard for them.

RIP Caroline😥🐴

RIP Caroline😥🐴

We are sad to report tonight the death of 12 year old wild mare Caroline.

Around 5pm this evening witnesses observed a stallion aggressively chasing her and trying to breed her, and then saw her fall to the ground and die nearly instantaneously. Our veterinarian performed a field necropsy and found that Caroline’s neck had been broken. No abnormalities or injuries were found internally. Blood was taken and will be processed but we do not anticipate finding any abnormalities there either. Her injury was in line with the behavior reported and while it is a devastating loss, it was the result of natural wild horse behavior.

Caroline’s death should serve as yet another reminder of just how truly wild and dangerous these horses are - especially when hormones are involved.

If you’ve posted or shared photos of Caroline’s body, we ask that you take them down and share this post instead. We’d like to get the correct information out, and Caroline, our staff, and the people who so generously helped us tonight deserve the respect. Thank you.

With the tropical weather our area will be experiencing this weekend it is important you prepare for possible storm surge, flooding, wind damage and rip currents.

For Storm Surge and Flooding⛈🌊:
Just 6 inches of moving water can knock you down, and 1 foot of moving water can sweep your vehicle away. Stay off bridges that cross fast-moving water. Flood waters may be deep or contaminated.
Remember: TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN!

For Wind Damage💨:
Secure outside belongings such trampolines, lawn furniture, and outdoor equipment, that could be blown around in strong winds and become a hazard.

For Rip Currents🚩:
When visiting the beach, always check the lifeguard stand for beach and ocean warnings. Red Flags mean DO NOT enter the water! The ocean conditions are not safe for swimming or wading due to strong rip currents. For beach conditions and information, text SAFECOROLLA to 888-777.

These few tips will help protect your .
