So this just happened. 🤯😡 A couple things:
1. We’ve had several horses literally kill each other in the course of normal, natural, daily wild horse life over the last couple months. If they can do that to each other, what do you think they could do to you? Or your toddler? This is unbelievably dangerous and stupid. The law states keep 50ft away for a reason - your own safety. There are signs EVERYWHERE. Ignorance is no longer an excuse.
2. Thank you to the multiple people who reached out to report this incident. We appreciate it - it takes a village and when you saw something, you said something! The sheriff’s department was contacted and our staff was dispatched to the area.
3. Please do not solely rely on Facebook messenger or groups to report incidents like this. If you witness this, you need to call the sheriff’s department immediately. The number is 252-453-3633, and if you can’t remember that, just dial 911. There are many reasons why this is important…
First of all, this is a law enforcement situation. These people deserved a citation and only a deputy can do that. If you witness it, your photos and information are critical and you need to be the one to report it.
Secondly, it is a direct line to CWHF no matter the time of day. I can’t always monitor Facebook messages 24/7 but unless I am in a coma I am going to answer 100% of the time when dispatch calls me (and to be honest, my ringtone is Raymond braying so it would probably wake me up out of a coma 😉). Calling dispatch means that law enforcement can do their job and we can do ours, all in the most efficient, streamlined way. Time is really of the essence in situations like this.
Hopefully this is a lesson to everyone who visits the beach that our community is watching and we are all invested in keeping these horses wild and free, and keeping you safe. Behavior like this will be reported and there are consequences for your actions. Please be respectful and follow the rules - many lives depend on it!
