Give A Story This Holiday Season

Are you still looking for an extra special holiday gift? On Wednesday, December 18, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., you can create the perfect present for kids, grandparents, or anyone special in your life, thanks to Reading Legacies! They will film a video of you reading a story aloud, creating a keepsake that will last forever.
Are you wondering why you should come into the library to film with Storybook Inspirations? The volunteers are trained and will help you feel comfortable and confident reading your chosen story aloud. They will edit the video for you- no need to worry if you have a clean start or have to lean into the camera for a super close-up while you are trying to turn the recording off like on a smartphone. Once the video is edited, you’ll be sent a secure, shareable YouTube link to your video, so you won’t have to worry about sending a large file.
Reading Legacies provides this opportunity to create “Storybook Inspirations” and was founded by Betty J. Mohlenbrock, Founder and CEO (retired) of United Through Reading, a similar program for deployed military family members. If you are unable to attend this Wednesday’s event, check out the library calendar at cplevents.org for upcoming dates. This program takes place every third Wednesday and fourth Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Why Civic Education Matters With David Davenport

On Thursday, December 5 at 11 a.m., join the Library for an insightful discussion with author David Davenport on his book, A Republic If We Can Teach It: Fixing America’s Civic Education Crisis. He’ll delve into the challenges and opportunities of preserving America’s democratic legacy through education. As demonstrated by the book’s title, a quote from Benjamin Franklin’s famed response to a question about the type of government the Constitutional Convention had created—“A republic, if you can keep it”—this program will discuss the urgent need for better civic education to preserve the republic.
Davenport is a research fellow emeritus at the Hoover Institution specializing in constitutional federalism, civic education, modern American conservatism, and international law. During his career at Hoover, he also served in administrative capacities as counselor to the director and the inaugural director of Hoover’s Washington, DC, program. Davenport is the former president of Pepperdine University (1985–2000). Under his leadership, the university experienced significant growth in quality and reputation. He is the co-founder of Common Sense California and the Davenport Institute for Public Engagement and Civic Leadership. He also served on the board of California Forward, a major bipartisan reform group, and was a member of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s California Performance Review Commission. He is a former senior fellow of the Ashbrook Center, where he worked on civic education projects.
Whether you’re a lifelong learner, a parent, a grandparent, or simply someone with a deep appreciation for American history, this event offers a chance to reflect on our country’s civic legacy and its impact on future generations.

Expanding Support For Mental Health

Recently, Congressman Scott Peters met with representatives from Safe Harbor Coronado to engage in a meaningful discussion about expanding mental health resources and support services for local youth and families. The meeting highlighted the urgent need to address mental health challenges within the community, particularly among young people, and explored ways to strengthen existing programs and create new initiatives that can better serve the population. The conversation focused on empowering the community to build resilience through accessible mental health services, counseling programs, and educational outreach. Peters and Safe Harbor representatives discussed the importance of not only providing immediate support but also fostering long-term well-being by addressing the root causes of mental health struggles. By collaborating on these efforts, they aim to equip Coronado families and youth with the tools and resources necessary to navigate life’s challenges, reduce stigma around mental health, and promote healthier, more supportive environments for future generations. Through this partnership, the goal is to create a more resilient community where mental wellness is prioritized and every individual has the opportunity to thrive.
