Nature Trails Kayaking owner Carrie Meyer and her friend Melanie (and their 2 dogs) spent the morning picking up trash on Mustang Island through CBBEP's Packery Flat Winter Cleanup. This pristine area is near one of my most favorite kayaking spots. Stewardship is part of building a relationship with nature.

What a beautiful evening for kayaking! This family of 4 rented 2 tandem kayaks from Nature Trails Kayaking and enjoyed the calm conditions here on Corpus Christi Bay next our headquarters on North Beach.

Today's Kayak Eco Tour with Nature Trails Kayaking was at Lighthouse Lakes, a Texas Paddling Trail that combines birdwatching in the mangroves, visiting an historical lighthouse, cast netting for fish, and paddling along a deep water channel watching bottlenose dolphins.

Nature Trails Kayaking participated in the Coastal Bend Bays Foundation Adopt-A-Beach Cleanup this morning with dozens of other volunteers. Three of us kayaked through the marsh and wetlands at Packery Flats, collecting trash that the other volunteers couldn't reach from shore. This is one of my favorite kayak routes to take people on.

Our Kayak Eco Tour today along the Lighthouse Lakes Paddling Trail. Saw tons of birds, including lots of bright pink Roseatte Spoonbills, caught some little fish and shrimp, then saw wild dolphins swim by. Fun day with 2 fun women!

Collaboration Results in Individual Receiving Citations for “Waste of Fish” at Padre Island National Seashore.

A recent investigation by Padre Island National Seashore NPS law enforcement and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) resulted in an individual being cited for “waste of fish.” In Texas, it is legal to fish for and harvest shark. However, it is unlawful to leave shark or bait fish taken from public waters to die without the intent to retain the fish for consumption or bait.

In early August NPS law enforcement rangers and science and resources management staff documented a decapitated tiger shark and bull shark, a deceased and mutilated sting ray and approximately 15 mostly intact deceased crabs.

NPS law enforcement rangers, in collaboration with TPWD game wardens, located a suspect and conducted an interview. The individual confessed to decapitating the sharks, harvesting some meat, and leaving the shark bodies on the beach to be scavenged and rot. As a result, TPWD game wardens issued multiple citations for “waste of fish.” TPWD will be seeking civil restitution for the assessed monetary value of the sharks.

The success of this case can be attributed to collaboration among group teams within the park, as well as the partnership between NPS law enforcement rangers and TPWD game wardens. If not for all individuals involved, this case may never have been discovered or resolved.

To ensure the viability of shark and fish populations into the future, park visitors interested in fishing at the national seashore must follow applicable state fishing regulations.
