Areas of Texas are expecting dicey weather soon. If temperatures dip below 32 °F for an extended period, water pipes can freeze, burst, and cause significant damage. Prevent winter weather mishaps with these tips.
1) Let your faucets drip during the entire duration of the freeze. Drip hot and cold water in a fine stream in your apartment's faucets: kitchen sink, bathroom sinks, bathtubs, showers, etc. Catch the drip and use the water for other purposes, like watering plants or filling the dog's water bowl. Take special care when preparing your washer/dryer, especially in an outside patio closet.
2) Open your cabinets. Leave the cabinet doors under all sinks open to ventilate the pipes with warm air- leaving the bathroom and kitchen doors open, too.
3) Heat your home. Please turn it on to your desired lowest setting (60 ° is recommended). Do not turn the heat completely off if you leave for the day (or an extended period).
4) Be alert. If you see anything unusual - for example, if your water does not come on, or if you see water leaking anywhere in or around your apartment building, notify the leasing office and the maintenance team immediately!
5) Follow all management instructions to reduce the risk of burst water pipes that will cause the loss of water services.
6) Bring in hanging and potted plants.
7) A wintery mix and ice accumulations can bring hazardous walking conditions. Be very careful on walkways, balcony areas, and stairs!
Stay informed and follow local guidance for winter weather safety.
