Good morning!

06/12/2022

It was in the summer of 1961, before I'd entered the first grade, when the world was a more fun and safe place to be. I recall those days as blissful times when even the adults around me seemed to enjoy life as much as I. Neighbors were great friends whose company we enjoyed. I looked forward to our weekly delivery of milk from the local delivery man. He used to let me ride on the running board of his truck as he cruised probably no more than 7-10 mph from house to house. He also let me scoop ice from the ice box to crunch. There was nothing more tasty than that frozen crushed ice in my hands as I slurped it up in the summer sun.

I rode along for a block or two, then ran back home with a handful of ice feeling exhilarated and triumphant. The ice had a strange refrigerated taste to it, but I slurped and crunched as it quickly began to melt in my hands. It wasn't every kid who got to ride with the Milk Man; for me it was a special honor. From Fudgesicles to Freeze Tag, those days were the best of times to have grown up in, and I count myself lucky to have been there. Whenever a slight breeze sailed across my bare shoulders, I was made up all over again in a noble world where bees buzzed and gentle clouds drifted across the blue. having lived yet another unforgettable adventure on the hot neighborhood streets of my home town.

And one of the most exciting, and enduring memories is that of the Milk Man cruising the neighbohood going door-to-door.

Cortland County Reports Preliminary Results from This Past Weekend’s COVID Rapid Testing Event

Cortland- the County is announcing the results from this weekend’s successful partnership between the Cortland County Health Department, New York State Health Department and local School districts.
From Friday afternoon until 5 o’clock Sunday 1,913 individual rapid COVID tests were administered across all three testing sites. Of those tests 56 people tested positive for COVID with 1,857 people testing negative for the virus.
Of the 56 people that tested positive for the virus, 33 are Cortland County residents. Of the total number of individuals tested over 452 were non-county residents. The Health Department is still breaking down individual county of residence for those not from Cortland County.
Cortland County Legislative Chairman Paul Heider says, “I’m very pleased and encouraged with the number of people that participated in this event and overall I think that it provides additional insight to where and how the virus may be spreading within and outside of our County.
Heider went on to say that he is pleased with the overwhelming community support that made this event a success, “I want to personally thank our partners at the State Department of Health for bringing resources to our community and I specifically want to thank the Cortland, Homer, and Marathon School Districts for their willingness to work with the County to provide theses testing locations with very little advance notice.
Heider also noted over 40 volunteers donated their time and talents to help ensure that the event ran smoothly.
At the conclusion of each event Sunday each site was deep cleaned by teams from a private cleaning company as part of the State’s role in bringing the clinics to Cortland County.
The County is continuing to look at options for continued community-wide testing and reminds everyone that if you are feeling ill to please stay home and consult with your health care provider about getting tested for COVID.
