Our Citizen Science Antartica Expedition is getting closer each day! This excursion takes place February 20-March 4, 2024 represents the 150th anniversary of the HMS Challenger’s crossing of the southern polar circle, when modern oceanography began.

Meet some more of the Scientists and Imagemakers joining Blue Green Expeditions to honor their contribution to our understanding of the world’s oceans.

-= Angel Yanagihara=- Scientist
Dr. Angel Yanagihara, from the University of Hawaii, is one of the world’s leading experts on jellyfish and zoo plankton- especially those that sting! Angel will focus on collecting samples to look at how the population of various species in Antarctic waters may be changing. In conjunction with Dr. Petra Lenz, they will use eDNA to get a broad idea of species present in the water column and how their frequency may be impacted by changes in salinity and temperature. She will also work with snorkelers as they search the water column for potential invasive species and collect samples of indicator species.

-= Becky Kagan Schott=- Imagemaker
Becky is a five-time Emmy-Award winning underwater cameraman, photographer, and technical diving Instructor whose work can be seen on major networks including, National Geographic, Discovery Channel, and The Travel Channel. She specializes in bringing imagery from challenging aquatic environments, such as filming in caves, under ice, and deep shipwrecks. Becky has over 23 years of diving experience, is a Women Divers Hall of Fame member, and has enjoyed traveling and diving from the Arctic to Antarctica.

-= Berkley White=- Imagemaker
Berkley White’s passion for the ocean and diving led him to establish Backscatter Underwater Video & Photo. If you’ve spent any time watching Shark Week, then you’re one of the countless number of people who’ve been educated, directly or indirectly, about the marine environment by Berkley White and his crew at Backscatter. Berkley’s images and technical articles are published in US and international dive magazines, and he regularly serves as a photographic judge or technical editor on publications.

We will soon embark on an unforgettable excursion! Our February 2024 Citizen Scientist Antarctic Expedition commemorates the 150th anniversary of H.M.S. Challenger’s crossing of the southern polar circle with top Scientists and Imagemakers- who specialize in areas of polar science, polar diving, underwater photography and videography, STEM education, and film making.

Modern oceanography began with the H.M.S. Challenger Expedition between 1872 and 1876. It was the first expedition organized specifically to gather data on a wide range of ocean features; including ocean temperatures, seawater chemistry, currents, marine life, and the geology of the seafloor. Within four years the team covered 127,000 km and the information gathered during that expedition is still used by scientists today.

150 years later, Blue Green Expeditions will bring together citizens and top Scientists and Imagemakers to celebrate the beginning of oceanography that started with the H.M.S. Challenger.

This October Blue Green Expeditions will be venturing to the Sea of Cortez for a Women’s Divers Hall of Fame Excursion! Here the team of divers will embark on the Nautilus Gallant Lady for an incredible underwater adventure from Cabo to Bahia de Los Angeles.

The Sea of Cortez boasts a breathtaking underwater world, full of massive schools of jacks, barracudas, sharks and rays. Divers will get to experience large groupings of curious and playful sea lions that love spending their time checking out the divers. It’s also not uncommon to be greeted by whale sharks here. When one experiences the Sea of Cortez, it makes perfect sense why Jacques Cousteau dubbed it the “World's Aquarium” as there is truly something for everyone: photographers, big fish lovers, weird critter hunters and so much more.

If that’s not impressive enough, this trip will be accompanied by members of the Women Divers Hall of Fame, including Sally Wahrmanm, Maureen Langevin and Faith Ortins. But it gets even better! Proceeds from this trip will be donated to the Women Divers Hall of Fame Scholarship and Training Grant Fund. 😯

Everyone knows we love the ICE! Usually this is the time of year we are in Antarctica. While that couldn't happen this year, we were happy to contribute to the latest article on cold water diving from the folks at GUE. You can see the story here: https://gue.com/blog/ice-how-intrepid-souls-spent-their-winter-lockation/

While we will have multiple trips to Antarctica, we can't wait until then to get our ice fix so join us in Iceland and/or Greenland for ice, crystal clear waters of Silfra and northern lights! Thanks to Jim van Gogh and Byron Conroy for sharing their images!
