On GeoTours trips we always try to include a rural area to learn more about traditional, village culture. On the GeoTours Philippines trip we visited Motag Living Museum, the first village in the Philippines set up to demonstrate rural culture to visitors. One of the best hikes in the Philippines is to the crater lake of Mt. Pinatubo. Pinatubo's eruption in 1991 was the largest volcanic eruption of the last 100 years. It caused total darkness on Luzon Island for 36 hours, discharged over 2 cubic miles of ash into the atmosphere, which then got blown around the globe. The next 2 years (1991-93) were cooler than normal since Pinatubo's ash lingered in the atmosphere and blocked some of the sunlight from reaching the earth.
