The annual Lighting of the Square tradition is scheduled for a beautiful, chilly Thursday, November 21, 2024 evening from 6 PM to 7 PM! With performances by children and youth choirs from The Arts Association in Newton County and Washington Street Community Center starting at 6 p.m. and the lighting of the Square with fireworks at approximately 7 p.m., it will be a magical holiday celebration! Santa will be joining the fun and will be making s'mores, available while supplies last.

At least 60 of Santa's helpers from Covington (Ga.) Police Department , Newton County, GA Sheriff's Office and additional public safety agencies will be on the Square for the Lighting where security cameras have been installed and additional lighting will be added. A public safety tent will be located on Pace Street for lost parents and public safety assistance if needed. Additional Santa's helpers from Covington Fire Department, Georgia, Newton Fire Services and Central EMS will also be on the Square making it to the top of the nice list!

The Square will close to vehicular traffic at 4 PM, including Pace Street south of Williams Street, but it will be open to pedestrian traffic and BUSINESSES WILL BE OPEN. No parking will be allowed in the fireworks fallout zone, on Floyd Street , or in on-street parking marked with safety cones and/or no parking signs. Remember, if you see something, say something. The juvenile curfew for anyone 16 years of age or younger is 9:30 PM. Youth who are out after curfew without their parents or guardians will be cited. Parents or guardians of these youth will also receive a citation.
