My grandsons...... Jhaloni has always been a dancer! But they both accepted the challenge and danced on mainstreet while waiting for the donkeys and runners to come in! Sightings can be very common here in Creede. So many opportunities exist for observing wildlife! Evenings and early mornings are the best times for sightings and getting a glimpse is always a thrilling experience.
Remember these tips if you encounter wildlife:
✔️ Respect their wildness and do not attempt to approach or feed wild creatures.
✔️ Store food, trash and scented items properly
✔️ Use the “rule of thumb” to judge distance and make sure you are giving wildlife space. Hold your arm straight out and give a thumbs up. Make sure your thumb can cover the entire animal. This is a good way to help you judge distance, and in general, you want to stay further away from larger animals!
✔️ No touching and no harassing
✔️ Keep your eyes on the road. Vehicle strikes can happen and many roads cut through their habitats or migration routes. Always follow the speed limits and watch for any wildlife that may dart into the road. When you want to stop to watch wildlife, pull your vehicle completely off of the road into a designated pull out. This keeps wildlife safe as well as other motorists.
✔️ See something, say something. Tell Ranger if you come into physical contact with wildlife. Also, tell Ranger if you see wildlife that are sick, dead, or acting strangely, including wildlife that approach you. And when you see people who aren’t following these guidelines, let them know what they can do to be a smart wildlife watcher, too, and contact a ranger if necessary.
Always be responsible, stay safe, and keep our wildlife wild!
