The vista point just south of Crescent City is actually a cool vantage point to spot Saint George Reef Lighthouse… even though it’s about fourteen miles away from the rock!

This is one of our all-time favorite photos. The contrast between the tiny men on the boat and towering sentinel ahead of them is astounding.

It was truly a unique experience to live life on that rock, and it is our mission to keep that history alive.

Telephoto lenses are incredible things, aren't they!?

Although Saint George Reef Lighthouse is many miles away from the Battery Point Lighthouse, this photo makes it look like they're much closer. Crescent City really is so lucky to have these two historic lighthouses in our community!

From the desk of John Zimmerman, SGRLPS President:

“Marilyn Plaisted McLaughlin 16 September 1942 - 8 November 2024

Founding Member and Director Emeritus

Saint George Reef Lighthouse Preservation Society

Marilyn along with her husband Jim was involved with
Saint George Reef Lighthouse Society from the very
beginning. She was involved as a valued board mem-
ber, volunteered in every capacity, and prepared meals for work party volunteers on work weekends at
the lighthouse for several years.

Photos of Jim and Marilyn working on projects large and small illustrated
their willingness to do any task. Marilyn was also a history docent during lighthouse tours. As the years went by, Marilyn's role was also shore side, taking reservation ticket payments, selling souvenirs and staffing our information booth at various fundraisers.

Recently, the board of directors commissioned a plaque honoring both Jim and Marilyn McLaughlin recognizing their contributions. The board also named the Galley (kitchen) out at the lighthouse after her for all the wonderful meals she cooked for the volunteer crews.

As president, my job was made easier with Marilyn's advice, encouragement and council. She was not only a valuable colleague, but a true friend to us all. Over the Thanksgiving holiday, we can give thanks for Marilyn’s life. Rest well Marilyn. A life well lived.”

It is with deep regret to report the passing of Marilyn McLaughlin. She was a volunteer and board member of the Saint George Reef Lighthouse Preservation Society from its beginning. Her dedication kept the society going and her advice was used many times solving problems. You will be missed by us all.

Any time we need to do repairs or restoration work at St. George Reef, we have to hire a helicopter to bring personnel and supplies to and from the rock.

It can get costly taking care of such a special place, and your donations make a huge impact.

The first Head Keeper at the Saint George Reef Lighthouse was John Olsen, who served here from 1891-1913. Before taking the role of Head Keeper, he spent three years employed in the construction of the lighthouse.

After leaving the rock, John Olsen went on to serve as Head Keeper of the lighthouses pictured below: Los Angeles Harbor Lighthouse in 1913 and then Oakland Harbor Lighthouse in 1914.

What an adventure it must have been to be lifted by the billy pugh net in order to get onto the rock. It seems as though the the ocean was pretty calm when this photo was taken... but imagine if it was rolling!
