Happy Star Wars Day! May the Fourth be with you!

Here's an awesome behind-the-scenes photo from 'Return of the Jedi', shared by Warwick Davis, the actor who played the Wicket the Ewok (seen in the photo, in front of Chewbacca, Han Solo, and Leia).

Our redwoods played a starring role as the forest moon of Endor in this beloved, classic film. You can check out one of the most famous filming locations in Humboldt, Cheatham Grove. The speeder chase scene, with Luke and Leia fighting stormtroopers, was shot in the grove. Endor was shot all around the Redwood Region, Jedidiah Smith Redwoods State Park in Del Norte County, being another major filming location.

Get out and see the locations of Return of the Jedi and more films shot in our region using our Map of the Movies: Filmed on the Redwood Coast California!

The travel company described the 175 miles between Humboldt County and Crescent City as “a vast and varied experience every traveler should have.” Boise, Idaho, and Chattanooga, Tenn., came in second and third.

Northern California features tons of beautiful places, but some might consider this state park downright magica because it so closely resembles fantasy.

From the Undiscovered Wanderings blog about Crescent City. Yes there is plenty of outdoor spaces, tall trees, wild & scenic rivers and rugged coastline and pristine beaches. Perfect for the outdoor adventurist as we like to say "Nature's Playground is Open"

Crescent City is small, and at first glance resembles, as one local explained to us, an “Alaskan fishing village” more than a typical California city. Its location puts it in rough waters, jagged and cliff-filled coastlines, and a cool climate, where 75 degrees is considered a heat wave, even in August. It’s windy, rain comes and goes, but that doesn’t stop the masses of tourists, backpackers, fisherman, outdoor adventurists, and wanderers from visiting. In fact, that’s exactly what brings them here. Crescent City attracts people from all over the world, visitors and residents alike. The reason we heard most: it’s the best place for the outdoors. No surprise there: plenty of outdoors in this neck of the woods…and there’s a lot of woods! And yes, CC is near the famous redwood tree that you can drive through.

U.S. 101 CLOSURE UPDATE 4/19/17 6:30 PM:

Due to continuing slide activity, Caltrans cannot yet put a date on reopening U.S. 101 north of Leggett in Mendocino County.

Our contractor began work today, removing 82 dump truck loads of material and removing a small portion of the rock fall fence, but had to shut down early because the slide became too active to continue safely. They intend to resume tomorrow, working 12-hour long days, 7 days per week, until the highway is reopened. The progress of the work, however, will be dependent on the weather and the continuing movement of the slide.

Safety is Caltrans #1 goal for our workers, our contractor’s workers, and the traveling public. We know that the closure is a hardship for many, and we are committed to safely reopening the highway as quickly as we can.

The redwoods are beautiful rain or shine! The rain actually brings out colors not seen when it's dry. Kind of like how rocks are more colorful when wet.
