It’s a fact!
All a manatee’s teeth are molars and are constantly being replaced. Called “marching molars,” new teeth form at the back of the jaw, wear down as they move forward, then eventually fall out. This constant tooth replacement is a great adaptation to their diet, which includes plants and sand that are often abrasive and wear the teeth down. Find more facts at savethemanatee.org/facts

For this , we have a fun fact that will blow your mind! Did you know that 90% of Florida’s drinking water comes from groundwater?

That’s right, and Florida springs give us a unique ability to see how our groundwater (the water we drink!) is fairing. Come by Three Sisters Springs and take a look at where your drinking water comes from!

The water is a clear, blue-green and lined with rocky shorelines and thin trees draped in Spanish moss (tree hair). Much of the vegetation are varying shades of green with a cloudy sky overhead.

Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge and our partners at Southwest Florida Water Management District and City of Crystal River are committed to the protection and restoration of Three Sisters Springs. In recent years, we have stabilized the shoreline and we need your help to protect the springs for years to come! We will be posting seven tips for responsible recreation at Three Sisters Springs. Please practice these tips while visiting.

Tip #1: Stay in the water or paddle craft and keep off the rocks and shoreline.

The rocks may look appealing to rest on, but don’t be fooled! The rocks stabilize the soil to help plants grow along the bank. They can also be dangerous and slippery to walk on from algae.

The sandy shoreline in the background is green with vegetation and mossy rocks with a forest just beyond the rocks. A text overlay states: “Stay in the water or paddle craft and keep off the rocks and shoreline.” Followed by the tag line “Protect Three Sisters Springs” and 3 logos (Southwest Florida Water Management District logo depicting the state of Florida with the district boundaries shaded in gray, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service logo depicting a fish jumping out of water, a mallard flying over the fish, and a sunset background, and the City of Crystal River logo depicting a manatee wrapped in a ribbon with the statement “Home of the Manatee” written across it.)

It's officially scallop season! 🚤 Here are a few safety tips from MyFWC Florida Fish and Wildlife to remember while finding underwater gems. 🐚

💧 When scalloping in open water, divers should stay within 300 feet of a correctly displayed divers-down flag or 100 feet of a divers-down flag if on a river, inlet, or navigation channel.
💧 Always operate your boat at idle speed when traveling within 300 feet of a divers-down flag in open water or within 100 feet of a divers-down flag on a river, inlet, or navigational channel.

Enjoy the season responsibly and happy scalloping!
