•“Adult manatees are typically 9-10 feet long from snout to tail and weigh around 1,000 pounds; however, they may grow to over 13 feet long and weigh more than 3,500 pounds.” They are pretty much all muscle! With 3-5% body fat they are super lean animals with no predators.

Fun fact! Manatees have marching molars so all that chewing is tough on teeth. Manatee teeth are continuously replaced from back to front as they grind down throughout their lifetime. Sometimes you will see them chewing on boat ropes or like this one maybe even the string of your wetsuit for they are constantly teething like a baby.

•Manatees are mammals, they must surface to breathe air. They may rest submerged at the bottom or just below the surface of the water, coming up to breathe on average every three to five minutes. When manatees are using a great deal of energy, they may surface to breathe as often as every 30 seconds. When resting, manatees have been known to stay submerged for up to 20 minutes!

Ever wonder what it takes to rescue a manatee? Today, during our tour we had the incredible opportunity to witness a live manatee rescue. It took about 14 skilled professionals to carefully get this sea potato onto the rescue boat. From there, he’ll be transported to a rehab center where he'll receive treatment, regain his strength, and—hopefully—be released back into the wild. Did you know the average cost to rescue and rehab a manatee is $40,000? It’s amazing to see how much care and dedication goes into giving these beautiful creatures a second chance at life! 🌿🌊 Thank you to everyone involved for their hard work and dedication to continue to educate and protect our Florida Manatees!
