Hard to believe we’re the middle of August already! Kids are headed back to school and the weather over the last few days has us all thinking of fall.
With kids headed back, Cuchara slows way down. August and September become perfect times to book that last minute escape to the mountains and away from the city!
Fall is just around the corner. Historically we see our first hint at a couple yellow leaves around August 15th leading to a spectacular color show in September and October.

Well, today was miserable wind... and pretty scary when those big gusts hit. I’m sure everyone can agree your mood is shot when you spend all day chasing yard decorations down the road.... so tonight, just a simple quick video of a hummingbird checking out dad’s security camera to calm the nerves!

Bandits at Dads
Bandits were on the prowl at 2am.
For many that have never been here, it's hard to envision what Cuchara, CO is like... it's probably best described for what it ISN'T- It's not Dallas, it's not Oklahoma City, it's not busy and hectic. We're probably 50-75 miles from the nearest crowd or traffic jam. It's not HOT in the summer (our high temperatures are in the low 80's). It hasn't been discovered by most. Cuchara may be one of the best kept secrets.
The town sits at about 9,000 ft in elevation and surrounded by the mountains. We don't exaggerate when saying the town is 1 street and about 2 blocks long. There's probably 50 year round residents. This is where you come to escape the hustle and bustle of everywhere else. It's about down time with the family, reconnecting with the simpler life and putting down the smart phone to enjoy the beautiful scenery.... not about how much you can pack your schedule.
I am often asked, "what is there to do in Cuchara." We have lakes for fishing, multiple hiking trails, shopping, restaurants, mini golf, bingo, a guest ranch bbq night, we sit as a hub to many wonderful day trips... and again no crowds, no rushing, no place you have to be at a certain time. Just kick back and relax.
