🔥 The biodiversity between the Northern and Southern Sea of Cortez is incredible. The sea life we witness on the surface from the boat, dinghies or snorkeling is fantastic. There's potential to see dolphins, sea lions, pilot, humpback, blue, fin, sei, orca, and s***m whales. Also, flying mantas, blue and brown-footed bo***es, cormorants, frigate birds, and the endemic yellow-footed gull.

This trip includes:
✅ 3-4 dives per day
✅ Three meals per day, snacks, beverages including soft drinks, juice, domestic beer & wine
✅ Activities included: Diving, hiking, kayaking, snorkeling & several land excursions exploring small towns & missions
✅ FREE daily photo workshops
✅ Port fees

📣 “The following day, north of the Lighthouse, we spent the day diving two local wrecks and the healthy, vibrant coral reefs off Cabo Pulmo. The stony coral reef sites are the northernmost in the eastern Pacific Ocean. They are remarkable in that they could not be any further from the Coral Triangle (in the Indo-Pacific), yet they reflect the same attributes of any stony coral reef formation in more prodigious regions, including thickets of coral reaching 100% bottom coverage to shoals of colorful fish.” – Mark Hatter, Trip Leader.

🐙 Some of the world’s most intelligent creatures and some tips on photographing them!

1️⃣ Octopus have the unique ability to squeeze into any space larger than their mouths (beaks) so keep a look-out for their hole/den!
2️⃣ Follow the breadcrumbs - if you know what a certain species eats and you see a pile of that food outside a hole, you’ve almost certainly found where an octopus lives.
3️⃣ Approach slowly - these critters are curious but shy. Be slow and respectful.
4️⃣ Search for a fish “friend” - fish often partner with octopus to hunt!
5️⃣ Wide angle or macro?
📣 “The ultimate question for an underwater photographer! In my experience, it depends on the size of an octopus. I like to use a Macro Lens for blue spotted octopus, red octopus, and other octopus smaller than a soft ball. For any octopus larger than a soft ball, you can get a nice reef scene with a wide angle lens like a fisheye Lens. The one exception being if you run into a large octopus with a macro lens... In these cases I choose to take dramatic photos of eyes and tentacles. ” - Nirupam Nigam
6️⃣ Use a high shutter speed - Octopus can move quite fast so you might want to try “freeze” the action
7️⃣ Choose your focus point! Generally focus on the eye but with octopus, consider focusing on the tentacles, too.
8️⃣ Consider your background. If an octopus is blending, you may choose to get low - but this is not always the case.

🤓 Knowing where they live, what they eat, and how they behave is essential for capturing an excellent photograph. So make sure you always do your research on the octopus species available in your location and get to know them. After that, it’s a matter of patience and getting to know the local octopus on a more personal level.

👇 3 fun facts about the flamboyant cuttlefish!

✅ Unlike most cuttlefish that blend into their surroundings, the flamboyant cuttlefish does the opposite—it flashes bright yellows, reds, and purples as a warning to predators. Its vivid display says, “I’m toxic, don’t eat me!” 🌈🐙✅ It’s one of the only known toxic cuttlefish species! Scientists believe its flesh contains venom, making it dangerous for predators that ignore its warning colors. ☠️✅ Instead of swimming like other cuttlefish, it "walks" along the seafloor using its modified arms. This makes it a fascinating subject to watch—and photograph! 🚶‍♂️🌊

🌏 Some of our favorite places to see flamboyant cuttlefish: 🇮🇩 Lembeh Strait, 🇵🇭 Anilao, 🇮🇩 Bali, 🇵🇬 Milne Bay

💡 Pro Tip for Photography: Want to capture its mesmerizing color shifts? Use video lights or ambient light instead of a strong strobe to bring out its natural fluorescence without washing out the details!

📣 “Dive 1 was a shark dive. We back rolled into a school of a dozen Caribbean reef sharks and silky sharks circling the tender boat. Some of them followed us down to 90 feet, where there were a couple of swim throughs. We continued along the reef and some of the group saw a manta while we slowly made our way back up the reef. The safety stop was under the boat with the sharks making multiple close passes.” – Tim Yeo, Bluewater COO, General Manager & Trip Leader.

🐢 Tips for Photographing Turtles!

📸 As with most animal photography, turtles need to be romanced into behaving for the camera. Take some time to get to know your subject before diving in for the winning shot. Underwater photography isn’t just about getting the exposure and composition right; the unique experiences are what drive the resulting imagery. Most of these rules can be applied to any underwater subject that comes into focus.

1️⃣ Approach slowly and don't make eye contact!

2️⃣ Move your focus box in front of the eye and towards the beak - cameras have the tendency to "back focus" on turtles (around the neck area)

3️⃣ Dial your strobes down a little - it's easy to overexpose the turtle with your strobes!

📣 “One of the unique features of a Bluewater trip to Dumaguete with Atmosphere is the ability to dive Apo Island as many times as you wish. Apo is renowned as one of the world’s healthiest coral reefs, complete with dozens of turtles, ambivalent to a diver’s approach. We didn’t hesitate to jump into the experience – a full day venture from the resort with three back-to-back dives. We decided to start on Apo’s calmer south side, in search of sea turtles and hard coral reefs. As we floated over large stands of healthy elkhorn, table, and lettuce coral we approached our first turtle. It was a hawksbill casually consuming coral and sponges on the reef – causing more destruction than a diver ever could do. Yet, upon our approach, it didn’t even bother to look up from its feast!” – Nirupam Nigam.

🤫 The secrets for photographing during blackwater dives!

🌎 Anilao, Philippines is quickly becoming established as the best place to pursue blackwater photography.

🐟 Suggested camera settings while shooting blackwater subjects:
• Higher ISO – (360-600 for DSLR)
• Higher F-stops – (f/18-f/25)
• Shutter speed – 1/200 sec

Some tips:
👉 Limiting your hand movements and fin kicks are essential as personal pressure waves cause your target subjects to close up, spin away, or worse, disintegrate.
👉 Using a strong hand-held torch with a tight beam, search the dark water for reflective subjects or anything that might catch your eye.
👉 Once found, use the subject’s momentum to drift along with it, and photograph it to the best of your ability.
👉 Mastery over dive skills really plays an important role in this environment, and it will take a few dives to get it dialed in.

🗣️ If you’d like more details on photographing during blackwater dives, comment “Blackwater” and we’ll send the article your way!

🦭 “On the blackwater dives [in Anilao], the subjects were simply stellar - although hard to focus on. Paper nautilus, exotic jellyfish, larval stage flounder & mantis shrimp, larval stage diamond squid, salps, pelagic gastropods and more were seen throughout our numerous blackwater dives. One of the favorite photos from the trip was a large purple jellyfish with a commensal fish tagging along beside it. When it comes to mastering chemistry of the ocean, these species have it down to a science.” - Scott Gietler, Founder of Bluewater Travel, Bluewater Photo and the Underwater Photography Guide.

🐋 Recap of our whale safari is live!

🤩 In February of 2025, nine intrepid guests joined Bluewater’s 8-day Ultimate Whale Safari in Baja for an unforgettable adventure…

🔥”There were lots of gray whales in the area (~55), some of which came quite close to us. Perhaps somewhat surprisingly, the mothers and calves are the friendliest, coming right up to our boat to check us out. This area is highly regulated, which means that there are never many boats competing for the whale’s attention. The guides recognize and have named individual whales and know each whale’s personality. In addition to the whales, bottlenose dolphins were plentiful. We were also treated to beautiful sunsets each night.” - Dan Bishop, trip leader.

✨ This year, trips are running through April, departing almost every day. We’re throwing in 1-night FREE hotel room in Cabo San Lucas for anyone who books this trip through us! Comment “Whales!” for more details and we’ll send you a message.

👇 3 fun facts about peacock mantis shrimp!

✅ Peacock mantis shrimp have one of the fastest and most powerful punches in the animal kingdom. Their club-like appendages strike with the force of a .22 caliber bullet, reaching speeds of 50 mph (80 km/h). They can even break aquarium glass! 🥊
✅ They have some of the most complex eyes in the animal world, capable of detecting 12–16 types of color receptors (humans only have 3!). They can see ultraviolet, infrared, and even polarized light, giving them an almost alien-like way of viewing the world. 👀
✅ Unlike many marine creatures, peacock mantis shrimp are known to be monogamous. They can form long-term pair bonds and stay with the same mate for years, sharing a burrow and even taking turns caring for their eggs.💙

🌏 Best places to see peacock mantis shrimp: 🇮🇩Lembeh Straight, 🇵🇭Anilao, 🇮🇩Bali, 🇮🇩Raja Ampat, 🇵🇭Dauin, 🇵🇬Milne Bay, 🇲🇿Ponta Do Ouro, 🇲🇿Tofo

💡 Pro Tip for Photography: If you’re shooting a peacock mantis shrimp, try using a diffused strobe or focus light to capture its vibrant colors without overexposing the scene. And be quick—they move FAST!

🤫 Diving in Socorro with Ikelite DS230 strobes!

🦈 “When I first found out about the DS230s I was admittedly skeptical. The DS161s and DS160s were already great. Would the DS230 really justify the higher price tag? After a week of diving with the 230s, I get it. Everything is better. The beam is just beautiful with a nice color temperature, a soft, wide beam angle, and more power. I can honestly say my photos improved from having this strobe in my arsenal - even when I shot with just one. Of course, going into the review I tried to think of some cons to even things out. The only one that came up had to do with a minor, noncritical, circuitry feature on the prototype strobe that has since been adjusted and my complaint no longer applies in the full-production model. So with that, I can honestly say that I have no complaints. Underwater photography is all about lighting, and with the Ikelite DS230s, things are looking pretty good for underwater photographers. ” - Nirupam Nigam.

👇 8 tips for photographing sharks!! 🦈

✅ Take a minute to understand the pattern that the sharks swim during a shark dive. They are animals of habit and especially at feeds will swim a pattern. Position yourself appropriately.
✅ Listen carefully to the pre-dive briefing; you will likely hear important information on both safety and shark behavior.
✅ Pull your head out of your viewfinder. Do this for both safety reasons and so you can observe the action around you and see compositions developing.
✅ Before the dive, picture in your mind the image you want to capture. Shark dives are often chaotic and it will help if you start with a plan.
✅ Blast away! Shoot a ton of exposures because a lot of what you can capture during a shark dive, especially from a composition standpoint, is a matter of serendipity.
✅ Be ready to shoot at a second’s notice. Some compositions will come and go that quickly.
✅ Dial your strobes down if you can so they recycle faster.
✅ Shoot with manual power settings on your strobes instead of TTL. Because of the shark’s countershading and quite often the fact that you are shooting against a darker background, TTL has the tendency to overexpose the white underside of a shark.
