Captain Crawdad is a 1-day, non-profit, arts festival created by students. Cumberland is a part of the Tri-City area in Harlan County, Kentucky.

Captain Crawdad is a 1-day, non-profit, arts festival created by students at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College in Cumberland, Ky. It’s very small and there isn’t a lot to do here except walk around town, go to church, or go to a bar. Harlan County is plagued with a lot of drugs. We try to offer something else the community doesn't have to travel hours away to experience; A multime

dia festival that features visual arts created by students the community around the county, as well as music by local/not-local bands. We offer free T-shirts, free pizza & soda, and a free 8-9 hour concert to the public. 300+ people come to crawdad every semester. Most of the people are in their teens and twenties. The art gallery is open to everyone, if you're interested in displaying any artwork. The bands perform in the black box theater, located in the Godbey Appalachian Center building on campus. It seats about 300 people, but most people are usually on the floor. Since it’s a black box theater, there is no elevated stage; there is just a black floor. There might be a small stage we can set up, but we aren’t sure yet. We have a part of the hallway cut off from the public for bands to put their equipment. There is also an option to sale merch - We provide tables. We hire sound people, so you don’t have to worry about bringing mics/ amps.

There is a Higher Ground show today at 3pm in the gymnasium of Harlan Elementary School in downtown Harlan, Kentucky. If you come to the show, you will see people in our community singing and dancing together, hear music by a host of local musicians, and be presented with stories of life in this community. There will be colorful lights, murals created by students at the local community college, a relatively comfortable seat, and deep consideration of how we take care of ourselves and each other. You should come. It takes about two hours to do the whole show. If you can’t make it today, there will be three more shows: next Friday and Saturday at 7pm, and next Sunday at 3pm. ✨ CALLING ALL ARTS & CRAFTS FOLK ✨

Due to cancellations, we've had some spots open up at MAMAW Festival: Mountains of Appalachia Music, Arts, and Wellness Festival! We are looking for artists and makers who would like the opportunity to sell their work at our event. Setup is COMPLETELY FREE! Priority will be given to those who are able to supply their own tents / tables / chairs as well as booths that do not need access to electricity. FOOD VENDORS ARE ALSO ENCOURAGED TO APPLY!
