..the final dimension turn of rod and piston center was completed. The bull rings and bull ring retainer plates will complete the piston/rod assembly for steam locomotive 1309. Two sets of piston rings have been ordered from our vendor in New York.

Great Scenic Railway Journeys Partners with WMSR for 734 Fundraising Campaign ⛰️🚂

We are thrilled to announce our partnership with PBS's longest-running railway series, Great Scenic Railway Journeys (GSRJ), as we kick off our fundraising campaign to restore the iconic WMSR 734 steam locomotive. To help propel this effort forward, GSRJ provided a $10,000 matching donation—a contribution that reflects Robert Van Camp's deep appreciation for the history and legacy of this incredible locomotive.

"As many of you know, I have a personal connection to the 734. Nearly 30 years ago, while filming our PBS documentary, Thunder in the Alleghenies, I captured this magnificent engine in action. The restoration work done by the dedicated staff back then was remarkable. I'm so excited to see the 734 make its triumphant return to service," says creator and producer Robert Van Camp.

The current team at WMSR has been doing incredible work, bringing the railroad and now 734 back to life. Their commitment to preserving this piece of railroad history is evident, and I'm looking forward to featuring the engine in an upcoming update segment for our series. It's a thrilling time for all of us who cherish the legacy of steam locomotives, and we can't wait to see the 734 chugging down the tracks again.

In addition to supporting the fundraising efforts for the 734, Great Scenic Railway Journeys is excited to collaborate with WMSR by making select restored historic passenger cars available from their collection for future excursions. This partnership aligns perfectly with our mission to share the magic of railroading with the public and support railroads dedicated to preserving these historical treasures.

Van Camp also stated, "I have been continually impressed with the work done by the new management and staff at WMSR. Their vision for the railroad and infusion of fresh ideas, such as new venues and experiences, truly capture the essence of railroading's glory days. It's inspiring to see how they're bringing new life to the railroad and making it an unforgettable experience for riders of all ages. I am proud to be a part of their mission to help preserve and present some of this nation's historical railroad rolling stock and look forward to seeing the matching funds pledged by their fan base."

As we embark on this exciting chapter for the WMSR 734, we invite you to support this vital project. Your donations will help ensure that this historic locomotive will continue to inspire future generations of rail enthusiasts, history lovers, and travelers alike.

Western Maryland Scenic continues our New Year's Eve update posts. Shop foreman, Dan Ferden, assembled not one, but THREE, of the chief mechanical officers from Maine's most accomplished heritage/preservation railroads. WMSR is humbled by the special friendships we have with and the dedication these gentlemen provided to get 1309 closer to the finish line. The attached video was made in November, and work will continue in January. The video is showing the first pass being made on the fireman's side high pressure cylinder bore on 1309. WMSR doesn't announce service dates for any of our equipment. Special thanks to: Brian Fanslau of Maine Locomotive & Machine Works, Leverett Fernald of the Downeast Scenic Railroad, and Jason Lamontagne of world-famous Wiscasset, Waterville and Farmington Railway Museum. Without the generosity of these three individuals, it wouldn't be possible to move our projects along this winter.
