:: Farm Fact Friday :: Pumpkin Edition 🎃🎃🎃

Today we've collected some tidbits you can carry to your Halloween party conversations this year, and surprise your friends over pumpkin carvings and witches brew.

Did you know ....

"Pumpkins" are actually a whole category of squashes (so that's technically a fruit on your porch), and the earliest versions came from Mexico thousands of years ago. But it wasn’t until the early 1900s that small American farms began cultivating pumpkins for a growing tradition that celebrated rural life.

Although pumpkins can be grown year-round in parts of the United States, the squash had already become known as a staple in harvest displays and holiday treats. And they've stayed as a firmly fall fruit ever since.

According to food scholar Cindy Ott, pumpkins first became popular because they symbolized a feeling of wholesome, country living and stability at a time when the world seemed uncertain and the US was becoming increasingly urban.

Today, the classic orange pumpkin has become an icon of autumn. But it's a whole industry grown almost entirely for looks. By 2007, nearly 90% of pumpkins were grown for decoration rather than food. Growing other ornamental and giant pumpkins also became popular with the rise of the signature orange "Connecticut field pumpkin" that are favorites today for jack-o-lanterns.

At Delve, we're curious what the future holds for this fall fruit, the farms who grow it, and the thousands of people who celebrate it. We LOVE hearing your thoughts about what drives you to the patch and seeing your pictures of how you decorate or display your pumpkins. (PRO TIP: Enter your photos in our contest for a chance to win farm adventures! Details below.)

We also like to find ways to help people learn more, participate sustainably, and get the most joy from this annual harvest tradition!
