A new urban mushroom farm has just opened its doors in Deep Ellum, and their hands-on workshop next Saturday (4/19) is just the way to get started. 🍄

Mushroom farmer Garrett will give you an overview of the process, tips and tricks to reach your goals, and send you home with a fruiting block of your own to get started. Mushroom Street Farms is the place to be next Saturday!

A so-called "Chicken Bill" going before the Texas legislature would help ensure more Texans can keep hens and gardens at home. It's passed the House twice but gotten struck down - now starting on its third attempt. Are you rooting for this bill to pass?

‼️🐇🥚‼️Hearing alert and call for online comments! We have our first hearing of the session, set on Representative Cortez's "Chicken Bill". This is the same bill that has been crafted and negotiated to perfection and already passed the House twice. It allows for up to 6 backyard hens, some rabbits, front or side yard gardens, and says that an HOA can't prohibit a cottage food operation. In a way it's the bill that launched Homemade Texas and started me on my own backyard chicken journey.

What can I say about keeping backyard chickens? It has added a new layer of love, care, interest, humor, and yes sometimes heartbreak to my life. Keeping them has made me more resourceful and independent. Before I had them, I used to call a handyman to help me do things. Now, I figure out how to do it myself. Sometimes my solution involves zip ties and a staple gun, but I get stuff done. My friends and family love my chicken stories; I always have something to talk about. Are the eggs cheaper? Lol no. But the hens lay whether there are eggs at HEB or not. Colorful, fresh eggs with the orangest yolks you've ever seen, laid by ladies living their best chicken lives.

If you have a story to tell the committee about what it would mean to you to have restrictions lifted on your ability to provide food security for your family, you can do it in person at the hearing. If you can't attend in person - you can still contribute with an online comment! 🖌

Select "HB 294 by Cortez" and fill out the form and hit submit. That's how easy it is to make a difference. You can submit comments up until the hearing begins, so SHARE SHARE SHARE with those friends in HOAs and cities with unreasonable restrictions, and let's pass this bill out of the House again.
