We docked in Trieste, Italy today. We didn't do an excursion, but just got off the ship and walked around town. It was hot and humid, but the town is beautiful and lots of history. Not many pics, but enjoy what we have.

We made it to Ravenna for the night before embarking on the RCCL Serenade for 11 nights. We are joining Carl Kunhardt & Judy Kunhardt for a segment of their Ultimate World Cruise. We have been with them for a couple of weeks from Athens on the Wind Spirit to Venice and now on the Serenade.

Ravenna is a small town where several cruise lines port out of for med cruises. Who knew there was so much history here. A basilica that was built in the 5th century to the hometown of Dante who wrote The Divine Comedy to a Piazza named after JFK.

if you haven't noticed, Chuck likes taking pictures of old doors.

I have not posted anything since Sunday because it has kinda been a whirlwind.

We disembarked the Wind Spirit on Sunday to fly from Athens to Rome to board a train to Venice. The flight was ok, but when we arrived at the train station, we discovered our train had been cancelled. We had to stand in line at the train station for about an hour for a "refund". While in line, Ali scrambled to get us a hotel in Rome. The overnight stay reinforced how much Rome is a great city to visit.

We were able to purchase tickets in the Executive coach on the train from Rome to Venice. That took us through some beautiful countryside and through Tuscany.

Once in Venice, we took a water taxi from the train station to the area near our hotel. We walked through a beautiful Piazza to the Hotel San Marco for a couple of nights.

On Tuesday, we took a glass blowing tour on Murano (another water taxi) that had some amazing pieces. The master craftsman was incredible as was the apprentice that made a horse in about 5 minutes. We took another water taxi to Burano that is known for lace craftsmanship. Then a public, larger water bus back to San Marco.

Today we move on to Ravenna where we will embark our ship tomorrow.

We are taking a group on a tour next June from Rome to Milan, so come join us for our 3rd trip to Italy and see why we love the country so much.

We anchored just off of Santorini and tendered to the old port. When you see pictures of Santorini, you are seeing the villages at the top of the island. It is amazing how thaes villages are built on top.

The old port is at water level and you have to either take a cable car to Fira, walk up 588 steps or ride the donkeys up. We opted for the cable car. Once in Fira, you have to take a bus to Oia Village where the iconic blue rooftops are.

The bus is a nice coach, however, our driver must have been related to Mario Andretti, as he drove that beast fast around winding turns with heep dropoffs as the shoulder of the road. Once in Oia, we decided to take a water taxi back to the old port. We wandered around Oia for a little while, but is was so busy and hot. The temps got to 96deg.

Now, think about this, Oia is at the top of Santorini and the water taxi is at water level. We have to get down to Ammoudi Port to take the water taxi. The only way down was by steps.... 287 steps that is. Donkeys are also used on these steps, so not only did we have to worry about cobblestone and marble steps, we had to dodge donkey poo...

By the time we reached the port, we were exhausted, drenched and had shaky legs. After a snack and drinks, we took the water taxi back to the Fira old port.

The ship had a BBQ on the back of the ship for dinner with line dancing with the crew. The cool thing about this ship with 129 guests is that you get to know the crew and vice versa.

Enjoy the pictures.

Yesterday, we anchored just outside of the port in Patmos. We had an excursion to visit the Cave of St John, where it is believed that he received the vision to write the book of Revelation. We couldn't take pictures, as it is a holy place and there was a service going on.

We then ate a small lunch at a small taverna, hosted by Christavalos, the owner. While there, a young woman came in and talked to him. She is getting married soon and wanted to brush up on the traditional dances. He turned on the music and got on the stage to dance with her. It was pretty cool that she shared that with us. They invited several of our group to join.

We went back to the ship and the rear marina was open and were able to jump in the Aegean Sea. It was pretty chilly and "refreshing".

After that, the crew brought onboard some local musicians and dancers.

We docked in Kusadasi, Turkey today and didn't do much. We didn't do a tour, but walked around the Bazar looking for a carry on bag. Many of you are familiar with the street hawkers in Cozumel along the Malecon. Well, triple the number of shop hawkers in the Kusadasi Bazar.

We spent the afternoon doing some work to catch up.

Windstar put together a dinner with traditional Turkish food at the Celsus Library in Ephesus, with a string quartet playing some classical music. The library is beautiful when it is lit up at night

We anchored in Mykonos and took a tender into the pier. Mykonos is exactly like the pictures that you see. There is an area along the sea called Litte Venice with shops and restaurants. The paths are so narrow that you can't walk side by side. Some "streets" are barely wide enough for small vehicles to get through.

We visited the windmills and of course took pictures. There are small Catholic and Greek Orthodox churches scatter throughout the area. We visited one that was 600yrs old. After wandering around a little more, we are some lunch by the shoreline.

Then back to the ship for a nap.

We had some time before we boarded our ship, so we took a little tour to the Temple of Poseidon. It was built away from Athens along the coast as a sentry post and in honor of Poseidon.

The views from the hill were spectacular. See comments for videos.

Then back to Piraeus to board the ship. The Windstar Wind Spirit is a 5 masted sailing ship that holds 148 passengers. We were told that there are 129 aboard our sailing.

We met up with our friends in Athens and did a private tour of Athens.

We started out with the changing of the guards at the President of Democracy s house. Every young man in Greece must do a year of military service. The guards a re selected young men and perform their service as such. The caps are red signifying the blood that was shed during the battle with Persians to gain independence. The long black "tassel" signifies the tears that were shed. The 400 pleats in the skirts signifies the 400 year reign under the Persians and the black puffs on the shoes were to capture the shoes. The bottom of the shoes are metal, just like a horses that were rode during the battle and the steps signify the grace of the horses movements. Be sure to turn up your sound

We then moved on the the Acropolis and Temple of Parthenon. It was originally built in 447BC and had had been destroyed many times. We discovered it was actually a large Lego complex, so look for some of the Lego features.

We stopped at the Olympic Stadium which was built in 1894 to hold the Modern Policy Games. The first Olympic games were held in Olympia until about 393AD when Theodesius ended them because of conversion to Christianity from Greek Gods. The modern marathon comes from when the Persians were defeated, a Messenger ran from Marathon to Athens (in full armor) to deliver the news. The distance was 26.2 miles.

Then on to the Museum of the Acropolis where millions of artifacts are stored. There is an architectural dig under the museum with ruins of a town.

Lunch, then on to Agora which was a marketplace in Athens in the early times of the Acropolis. Agora also had a Temple for Zeus.

I will post videos of the changing of the guard in the comments.
