This agora, (or public space), was the business, political, and legal center of Ancient Athens. Located under the shadow of the Acropolis, it brought together citizens and foreigners, merchants and philosophers, and artists and jurors. It was here that the Apostle Paul would have gone, in Acts 17:17, when he “spoke daily in the public square to all who happened to be there.” (NLT)

The Sea of Galilee: a beautiful backdrop of Jesus’s life and ministry. It was here in Galilee that he performed his first miracles and called his first disciples. It was here that he spent most of his life — living, working, ministering. It was here that he laid the foundations of his Church in his words to Peter and Andrew: “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” And it was here, after his death and resurrection, that he appeared to his disciples on the shores of the lake, performing yet another miracle and giving Peter a final commission:

Happy Sukkot! Also known as the Feast of Tabernacles or the Feast of Booths, Sukkot is a week-long harvest festival commemorating the Exodus from Egypt. This is a festival of celebration, of remembering God’s kindness and mercy, His provision and protection and deliverance.

“Celebrate the Festival of Tabernacles for seven days after you have gathered the produce of your threshing floor and your winepress. Be joyful at your festival — you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, and the Levites, the foreigners, the fatherless and the widows who live in your towns. For seven days celebrate the festival to the LORD your God at the place the LORD will choose. For the LORD your God will bless you in all your harvest and in all the work of your hands, and your joy will be complete.” Deuteronomy 16:13-15, NIV

The Day of Atonement: a day of fasting, repentance, and forgiveness. Also known as Yom Kippur, this solemn day begins at sunset tonight and will continue until sunset tomorrow. It was this day, as outlined in Leviticus 16, that God commanded the High Priest to enter the innermost part of the Tabernacle, the Holy of Holies, and offer incense and sprinkle the blood from the sacrifices to atone for his sins and those of the people. He would then lay his hands on the head of a live goat, confess all the sins the people had committed that year, and then send it out into the wilderness, to “carry on itself all their sins to a remote place.” (Leviticus 16:22, NIV)

According to rabbinic tradition, Yom Kippur commemorates the day Moses descended from Mount Sinai with the second set of stone tablets and announced the forgiveness of sins for the Israelites. As a result, this date has become a permanent reminder of the forgiveness and mercy of God, and is considered the holiest day in Judaism.

Some of the incredible artwork in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre✨

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem is one of the most significant Christian sites in the world. According to tradition, it is built on the location where Jesus Christ was crucified, buried, and resurrected. The church’s history dates back to the 4th century AD, when Roman Emperor Constantine the Great commissioned its construction.

A medieval-era baptistery in a nook of the Hagia Sophia. ✨

The Hagia Sophia (“Holy Wisdom” in Greek) is located in Istanbul, Turkey, and was originally constructed as a cathedral in 537 AD by Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. For nearly 1,000 years, the Hagia Sophia served as the central church of Eastern Christianity and the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Constantinople (now Istanbul). However, in 1454, when the city fell to the Ottomans, the Hagia Sophia was converted into a Mosque, and remained as such for nearly 500 years. In 1935, following the establishment of the Republic of Turkey, it was transformed into a museum until 2019, when it was once again converted to a mosque. It remains open to visitors and is one of the most iconic and contested architectural and cultural landmarks in the world.

The Hagia Sophia is one of the historical sites we visit on our tours in Istanbul as we learn about the early spread of Christianity. To learn more about our tours, visit morningstartours.com. We’d love to start a conversation! 🔗✨

The city of Delphi was considered by the ancient Greeks to be the center of the universe — a sacred place that drew pilgrims from all over the world. Today, it is a large archaeological site with many ancient buildings still intact, including the Athenian Treasury, built to commemorate their victory at the 490 BC Battle of Marathon, and the Temple of Apollo, home to the famous Oracle of Delphi, whose historical references of spiritual prophecies date back to 1400 BC.

Delphi is one of the stops on our Footsteps of Paul tour, where we visit locations significant to Paul’s missionary journeys throughout Greece. A tour of this ancient sacred place sets the stage for understanding the religious and socioeconomic culture into which Paul and his fellow believers brought the gospel.

This humble stream has a very special history. It was here, on the outskirts of Philippi, Greece, that the Apostle Paul met and baptized Lydia of Thyatira, a God-fearing woman who became the first person to be baptized on the European continent, marking the beginning of the spread of Christianity to the west. What an incredible legacy!
