On my last trip returning to Dallas from San Miguel, I came across the boutique hotel Elena de Cobre in Leon, Guanajuato and found it to be a great option if you are looking to stay near BJX (Del Bajio airport) when arriving late or have an early departure. It used to be an old casona (mansion) and it’s only 10 min (three blocks) from the historic center, where you’ll be charmed by a lively city full of history. The Expiatory Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Arco (arch) de la Calzada are about a 15 min walk.
Plus, a stay at the Elena de Cobre, unlike the hotels that are closer to the airport, gives you the opportunity to explore yet another great Guanajuato city. Yes, you still have to wake up very early to catch that 6am flight but at that time there was no traffic, and it took about 20 min to the airport vs 10 min from say the Fairfield, where unfortunately there is nothing around but a few restaurants. Or better yet, take the afternoon flight, this way you’ll have more time to shop for some of Leon’s famous leather shoes or try their delicious nieves. Oh, and did I mention, the Elena de Cobre is a member of Design hotels which is offered under the Marriott brand so if you have extra Marriott points, this is a beautiful place to spend them. Hooray! The superhighway from Oaxaca City to Puerto Escondido is finally open making it more convenient and faster to arrive at the beautiful beaches of Puerto Escondido, Huatulco, and many other secluded beaches on the Oaxacan coast.
