Thank you to for the opportunity to learn more about this beautiful part of northern Italy!

I am in awe of these majestic mountains!

Why should you add the Dolomite Mountains to your bucket list?

- The natural beauty is jaw droppingly beautiful!
- It is less crowded than many other parts of Italy.
- It is an amazing ski destination and is MUCH cheaper to ski than many parts of the US. Spring break anyone?
- Hiking from mountain hut to mountain hut, where you can find good food and a warm bed, is very popular activity here.
- The food/wine scene in the little villages of the Dolomites is very impressive.
- The region of Alta Badia is unique in that they have been able to keep their local language (Ladin) and many of their cultural traditions.
- Many hotels in this region are very small and owned by local families. They literally welcome you into their home which makes for a very special experience.

As Italy gets more crowded, it is our responsibility to encourage travelers to try new destinations. The Dolomites will not disappoint!

Renting a houseboat was on my husband’s bucket list, and we ticked that box on the Murray River during our time in Australia.

Moama on Murray Houseboats has an amazing fleet. We were able to rent a houseboat with five bedrooms AND five bathrooms which was perfect for our family of 11. The bonus was a top deck with a hot tub!

We chose to rent a boat in Echuca due to it’s proximity to Melbourne (just a few hours drive), but Mildura is another option with more to do offshore.

Intrigued? Here are a few things to keep in mind:

- A drivers license is the only thing you need to rent a houseboat. A lesson is provided upon arrival, but a little pre-research probably wouldn’t hurt.

- This was the perfect adventure for our multi-gen family. We loved the comfort of the houseboat and the ability to share meals together and play games at night.

- We loved our time boating, but surprisingly our best days were spent tied up to the shore exploring, fishing and making fires.

- We rented our boat in July which many Aussie’s might question given that it is mid-winter; however, the bonus was fewer boats, much cheaper prices and plenty of fire making to keep our boys entertained.

Just before we left for our five week vacation to Australia, I began to wonder if I had made a VERY BIG mistake!

5 weeks! What was I thinking?

Now that we are home, I’ve had a bit more time to reflect. Was it hard sometimes? Yes, but it was more AMAZING than anything! Why?

- We had time to slow down and spend quality time with family.

- We had the opportunity to have some important conversations that we’d likely never have at home.

- We had to share the same space, a very small car and many, many (mostly yummy Asian) meals together.

The result? We are more unified than ever as a FAMILY!

For those of you thinking about planning a BIG family vacation soon, just do it. The rewards you’ll reap are far more valuable than you can ever imagine!

I am still a novice when it comes to Asia, but I have a few BANGKOK tips to share based our experience/mistakes thus far!

1. Don’t put off visiting Thailand! Planning a trip to Asia can be overwhelming for those unfamiliar with the destination, but traveling here is much easier than I expected. Many people speak English & the Thai people are lovely!

2. The USD goes a long way in Thailand. If you are looking for value, you will find it HERE.

3. I would recommend hiring a private driver in advance if you are arriving in Bangkok on an international flight. Otherwise, Grab (taxi app) if the best option in the city to avoid being scammed by cabbies who don’t want to turn on their meter. The metro in Bangkok is also a great option and very easy to use.

4. Use day 1 to recoup and experience a traditional Thai massage. In the evening, book a tuk tuk ride (more fun at night!) to get your bearings. Tuk tuks aren’t great for sightseeing as they offer limited visibility, but they are a fun way for tired travelers to maximize their time with little effort.

5. Hire a guide for your first full day in Thailand. This is time & money well spent and can pave the way for a much better trip and a deeper understanding of Thai history and culture.

6. Beat the crowds in Bangkok and start early with a long-tailed boat ride on the canals of Thonburi. Then hit Wat Pho (temple) and go directly to the impressive Reclining Buddha which is easier to appreciate in the morning with shorter queues.

7. Choose your wats (temples) carefully! There are many impressive ones to choose from, but you can reach overload very quickly.

8. The Thai people stay up late and the night markets are lively well into the wee hours of the morning. Take a rest midday in order to fully enjoy all Bangkok has to offer.

9. Book a food tour early in your trip so you can learn about all the delicacies Thailand has to offer. Think of this as sightseeing for your palette.

10. If spending 3 nights (or more) in Bangkok, consider taking a day trip to the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market (1.5 hours away) & Maeklong Railway Market.

What I do

A little about me: My story is not a typical one. I am not European (Sigh!). I do not speak three languages fluently. I did not grow up visiting relatives in a small Tuscan village during summer vacation, but... The first time I set foot on European soil I knew that I felt more alive there than anywhere else and I knew I'd do anything to keep coming back.

I am a native Texan with a case of wanderlust that expands far beyond my home state. Little did I know that my first trip to Europe in 1997 would ultimately lead me to a career as a lead guide and guidebook researcher for Rick Steves' Europe.

My love of travel paired well with my initial career as a teacher. I spent most summers in Europe during those fourteen years, but a few weeks in Paris by myself was all I needed to realize it just wasn't enough. I needed to find a way to spend more time in Europe AND get paid for it.

During my many trips to Europe, there was only one source I relied on for information and that was what I had my sights set on. With a little courage, persistence, and (most importantly) prayer I approached Rick Steves' Europe and eventually... they said yes. My life has never quite been the same.
